Under the supervision of the Library Director, the Adult Services Librarian initiates, plans, and presents diverse and innovative programs, as well as providing outreach services to community members, organizations, and businesses. The Adult Services Librarian selects, maintains, and promotes collections through displays, booklists, and reader’s advisory. This position functions with a high level of autonomy, professionalism, and independent judgment. Some evening and weekend work required.
Key Responsibilities:
- Delivers exceptional customer service to library users at in-person and virtual service points providing expert-level reference, reader’s advisory, equipment, facilities, and assistance with use of current technology.
- As directed by the Library Director, leads and coordinates the facilitation of and communication around assigned services, projects, or programs, including preparing other department staff or volunteers to assist.
- Selects and maintains circulating adult collections as assigned and in accordance with the Library’s Collection Development Policy.
- Initiates, plans, and presents diverse and creative programs in support of department goals and community needs, including researching and arranging for external vendors to present at library programs.
- Actively promotes Library services, materials, and programs to the public.
- Plans, promotes, and provides outreach services for community members, organizations, and businesses.
- Demonstrates good stewardship of physical and virtual spaces and collections by creating thematic displays and producing and updating content for the library’s web presence, as assigned.
- Maintains knowledge of the automated circulation and technical services systems and assists with circulation and technical services tasks, as needed.
- Assists in the training of volunteers working in the areas of adult services; makes job assignments and verifies that assignments are carried out properly.
- Participates on various committees as requested.
- Serves as person-in-charge (PIC) during evening and weekend shifts.
- Performs related duties.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of a master’s degree in a course of study related to the occupational field.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position. Minimum of one to two years of experience.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Knowledge of library science.
- Knowledge of the library’s public service commitment.
- Knowledge of the Dewey Decimal classification system.
- Knowledge of reference resources and services, including computer-based systems.
- Knowledge of authors, genres, and the library collection and experience in collection development and collection maintenance/management.
- Knowledge of library policies and procedures and ability to interpret library policies and procedures to the public in a customer-friendly manner.
- Knowledge of the library computer system, computers, and job-related software programs.
- Must be able to initiate, organize, and follow through on programs, services, and projects.
- Knowledge of various digital media platforms.
- Knowledge of the community served by the library.
- Skill in planning.
- Skill in interpersonal and public relations.
- Skill in report preparation and presentation.
- Strong skill in public speaking and written communication.
