REPORTS TO: Principal
SUPERVISES: May coordinate and direct the activities of teacher assistants.
PURPOSE: To plan, organize and present instruction and instructional environments that help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their educational and social development.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Management of Instructional Time: The teacher has materials, supplies, and equipment for each lesson ready at the start of the lesson or instructional activity; gets the class started quickly; gets students on task quickly at the beginning of each lesson; maintains a high level of student time-on-task.
- Management of Student Behavior: The teacher has established a set of rules and procedures that govern the handling of routine administrative matters; monitors the behavior of all students during various activities and stops inappropriate behavior promptly while maintaining the dignity of the student.
- Instructional Presentation: The teacher begins lesson or instructional activity with a review of previous materials; introduces specific learning objectives; presents the lesson using understandable concepts and language; provides relevant examples; assigns tasks that students handle successfully; conducts lessons at a brisk pace while ensuring understanding.
- Instructional Monitoring of Student Performance: The teacher maintains clear work standards and due dates; circulates during class work to check student performance; uses various work products to check student progress.
- Instructional Feedback: The teacher provides feedback on in-class and out-of-class work to encourage student growth; affirms correct responses and provides additional support when responses are incorrect.
- Facilitating Instruction: The teacher has an instructional plan compatible with curricular goals; uses diagnostic information to develop and revise objectives; maintains accurate records of student performance.
- Interacting Within the Educational Environment: The teacher treats all students fairly and interacts effectively with students, co-workers, parents, and the community.
- Performing Non-Instructional Duties: The teacher carries out non-instructional duties as assigned; adheres to established laws, policies, rules, and regulations.
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Degree in education or a related area that qualifies for licensure as a teacher by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Physical Requirements: Must be able to use various classroom tools and equipment. Must be able to exert a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects.
Data Conception: Requires ability to compare observable characteristics.
Interpersonal Communication: Requires ability to convey information effectively.
Language Ability: Requires ability to read and prepare various documents.
Intelligence: Requires ability to apply logical principles to define problems and draw conclusions.
Verbal Aptitude: Requires ability to record and deliver information effectively.
Numerical Aptitude: Requires ability to utilize mathematical formulas.
Motor Coordination: Requires ability to coordinate hands and eyes accurately.
Manual Dexterity: Requires ability to handle various office equipment.
Color Discrimination: Requires ability to differentiate between colors.
Interpersonal Temperament: Requires ability to deal with people beyond giving instructions.
Physical Communication: Requires ability to talk and hear.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Ability to monitor the safety and well-being of students, motivate students, maintain a clean environment, perform clerical duties, maintain order in the classroom, operate common office machines, maintain files, and establish effective working relationships.
