REPORTS TO: Principal

SUPERVISES: May coordinate and direct the activities of teacher assistants.

PURPOSE: To plan, organize and present instruction and instructional environments that help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their educational and social development.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Management of Instructional Time: The teacher has materials, supplies, and equipment for each lesson ready at the start of the lesson; gets the class started quickly; maintains a high level of student time-on-task.
  2. Management of Student Behavior: The teacher has established rules and procedures for handling routine matters and monitors student behavior during activities.
  3. Instructional Presentation: The teacher begins lessons with a review, introduces learning objectives, presents lessons clearly, and summarizes main points.
  4. Instructional Monitoring of Student Performance: The teacher circulates during classwork to check student performance and uses various methods to assess progress.
  5. Instructional Feedback: The teacher provides timely feedback on in-class and out-of-class work to encourage student growth.
  6. Facilitating Instruction: The teacher develops instructional plans that align with curricular goals and maintains accurate records of student performance.
  7. Interacting Within the Educational Environment: The teacher treats all students fairly and interacts effectively with students, co-workers, and parents.
  8. Performing Non-Instructional Duties: The teacher carries out assigned non-instructional duties and adheres to established policies and regulations.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Degree in education or in a related area that qualifies for licensure as a teacher by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Physical Requirements: Ability to use classroom tools and equipment; must be able to exert negligible force frequently.
  • Data Conception: Ability to compare observable characteristics of data, people, or things.
  • Interpersonal Communication: Ability to convey or exchange information effectively.
  • Language Ability: Ability to read and prepare various correspondence and reports.
  • Intelligence: Ability to apply logical thinking to define problems and draw valid conclusions.
  • Verbal Aptitude: Ability to record and deliver information and follow instructions.
  • Numerical Aptitude: Ability to utilize mathematical formulas and apply statistical principles.
  • Form/Spatial Aptitude: Ability to inspect items for proper dimensions.
  • Motor Coordination: Ability to coordinate hands and eyes in using office equipment.
  • Manual Dexterity: Ability to handle a variety of office equipment and hand tools.
  • Color Discrimination: Ability to differentiate between colors and shades.
  • Interpersonal Temperament: Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions.
  • Physical Communication: Ability to talk and hear effectively.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to monitor the safety and well-being of students.
  • Ability to motivate students and maintain a clean and orderly environment.
  • Ability to perform general clerical duties and maintain order in the classroom.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
