Description

Anticipated Elementary K-5th grade Music Teacher

Position Purpose

Under the general supervision of the School Principal, to develop students' understanding and appreciation of the art of music. To identify, promote, and develop each student's talents in vocal and elementary instrumental musical expression.

Essential Functions

  1. Develops and administers music education curriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives.
  2. Promotes a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to all student learning.
  3. Develops a balanced music program.
  4. Conducts ongoing assessment of student musical learning and progress, and modifies instructional methods to fit individual student's needs, including students with special needs.
  5. Utilizes repertoire of all types of music literature, as appropriate.
  6. Plans, coordinates rehearsals for, and directs students in musical programs and performances outside the classroom.
  7. Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping and grading.
  8. Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
  9. Maintains standards for student behavior needed to ensure a productive learning atmosphere.
  10. Collaborates with colleagues in and outside of the building.
  11. Selects and requisitions appropriate music supplies and maintains inventory records, and ensures equipment is in good working order.

Additional Duties

Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Equipment

Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printers, copy and fax machines, and telephone.

Travel Requirements

Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  1. Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles.
  2. Ability to play an instrument or instruments, conduct students in playing instruments as needed.
  3. Ability to instruct students in singing, harmonization, and chorus as needed.
  4. Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed.
  5. Ability to organize and coordinate work.
  6. Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
  7. Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
  8. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.

Certification/License

Iowa State Certification as a Music Teacher.

Education

Bachelors from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to teaching assignment.
