Gill St. Bernard’s School is searching for a dynamic and experienced full-time Middle School Music teacher for the remainder of the 23-24 school year. This opening has an immediate start date. The ideal candidate will be passionate about teaching, experienced with developing a performance-based curriculum, committed to student-centered pedagogy, and eager to collaborate with colleagues. The successful candidate will be patient, encouraging, and flexible with students, and will model GSB’s core values of compassion, excellence, integrity, respect, and courage. The Performing Arts department seeks candidates who are enthusiastic about developing a balanced curriculum that includes music theory, instrumental technique, and ensemble performance.

Responsibilities

1. Teach four (4) sections of music: two required courses at the 5th and 6th grade level and two elective courses at the 7th and 8th grade level. Classes meet on a seven-day rotational schedule.
2. Organize and facilitate the Middle School production in conjunction with the Chair of the Performing Arts Department.
3. Direct the Middle School Choir once a week after school.
4. Organize and lead rehearsals and performances for students in grades 5-8 in preparation for school concerts and events.
5. Collaborate with members of the Middle School Performing Arts department to align lesson plans and curriculum.
6. Submit grades and academic narrative comments three times a year.
7. Serve as an advisor to 10-12 students (provide academic and emotional support, communicate regularly with parents/guardians, host in-person conferences twice a year).
8. Serve on a grade-level team to develop an experiential Spring Unit course.
9. Participate in divisional, departmental, and grade-level meetings.
10. Perform additional duties (lunch duty, substitute teaching for colleagues, afternoon carline, break duty) as assigned by the Division Director.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
2. 3+ years of experience teaching at the Middle School level; a keen interest in the development of learners in this age group.
3. Experience instructing a diverse student population.
4. Demonstrated understanding of cultural competency and full commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion work.
5. Enthusiasm for and effective use of technology in the classroom.
6. Desire for ongoing professional growth and membership in a community of learners.
7. Ability to work with students in-person or virtually, as determined by the school.
