Job Description
The University of Southern Maine invites applications for our new Content Writer. The Office of Marketing and Brand Management is currently building a team with a focus on digitalization, storytelling, branding, and data-driven approaches to marketing strategy. We work across the entire university on content that reflects everything from detailing our academic program and resource offerings, to crafting memorable and catchy marketing content across both digital and print - and we seek the right candidate to craft it.
You will help drive and evolve our content strategy and brand by writing original content, as well as compiling and optimizing content provided by stakeholders. You will be an active member of our internal team - from brainstorms and design conceptualizations to edit rounds. You will also be a key administrator within our CMS, inputting content yourself and ensuring it is not only engaging, but also fully accessible and SEO optimized. And you will work externally with our many stakeholders across the university on shaping content - from conceptualization to finalization - feeling the sense of accomplishment as your collaborations create new content that informs and inspires the USM community!
Pay and Benefits: This is a full-time position with a starting annual salary up to $60,000. Location: This position will be based primarily on the Portland campus with occasional work on our Gorham and Lewiston campuses as needed. The potential to work remotely one day per week may be considered after the probationary period.

Required Qualifications:
- Master's degree in communications, English/writing, or relevant field with at least one (1) year of related experience; OR Bachelor's degree with at least three (3) years of related experience.
- Experience in writing across a variety of print and digital needs; SEO experience a plus.
- Experience driving, compiling, and re-writing informed content collected from others.
- Experience working in a website CMS; Wordpress a bonus.
- Experience with the Adobe Creative Suite is a bonus.
- As a writer, you know when to lean sophisticated and academic vs playful and catchy depending on the content you are creating. You are comfortable in crafting academic language and complex university processes into clear and concise plain language.
- You can create original content based on meetings/information building with stakeholders but can also evolve and edit existing content that needs to be edited towards the layout and channel where it will be used.
- You have an eye for grammar and attention for detail.
- You are strong at working with others in the team to help conceptualize and give feedback on design such as print spread layout or digital UX in early project stages in order to ensure a strong content flow, and later to gather and craft content towards these designs and goals, working together to finetune content and/or design through edit rounds.
- You enjoy the evolution of content based on stakeholder and team feedback - taking edits and feedback constructively and with good-will. And in return, can constructively give helpful and clear feedback to those working within the university brand-standards that are not trained writers.
- You love visuals and choosing strong imagery to go with your written content. You can make base-level edits on images using Adobe Creative Suite tools or are open to learning this skill.
- You are agile and can balance multiple tasks at the same time and can make decisions in a fast-paced environment with evolving priorities, working across multiple deadlines.
- You are a good communicator in a teamwork situation as task management system will be key to the team's collaborations.
- You are able to learn-on-the go and be self-taught, take initiative, and work autonomously in a strong team environment.
