Internships
The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art offers internships to individuals seeking valuable experience in their area of interest or study. Internship opportunities vary and go beyond the study of art history; firsthand experience ranges from clerical work to research and focused projects. Internships are typically unpaid, but students can arrange academic credit for their experience. During the summer, interns have the opportunity to participate in a Summer Salon, which includes activities such as presentations by staff, visits to local galleries, and the opportunity to give in-gallery talks.
Museum departments typically accepting interns are: Education, Imaging Services, Design, Marketing, and Curatorial. Students are responsible for their own transportation and housing arrangements.
Internship Posting Timeline: Summer: late February/early March Fall: late June/early July Spring: late October/early November.

What You’ll Do
As the Senior Visual Designer, you will:
- Create omni-channel designs, including 2D and 3D applications, print collateral, web-based communications, and environmental graphics.
- Provide leadership and guidance to core team members and external collaborators, maintaining quality and consistency in museum communications.
- Collaborate on audience engagement initiatives and guest experience strategies.
- Manage vendor relationships, budgets, and schedules for in-gallery projects.
- Maintain high standards for brand consistency, accessibility, and innovation.
What You’ll Bring
- Education & Experience:
- B.F.A. in graphic design or equivalent experience.
- 5-10 years of professional design experience, with proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite.
- Hands-on experience with mock-ups, prototypes, and signage installation.
- Core Competencies:
- High emotional intelligence and collaborative skills.
- Strong organizational and project management capabilities.
- Knowledge of financial management principles and technical acumen.
- Commitment to integrity, inclusion, and exceptional communication.
- Technical Skills:
- Expertise in design and production on Mac; familiarity with PC platforms a plus.
- Experience in digital marketing, video, or motion graphics is a bonus.
35-Hour Work Week:
Monday to Friday 9 AM to 5 PM
