Under direct supervision, provides delivery of high-quality library services to the public. Staffs the various service and help areas. Assists in managing the day-to-day activities of the library, maintains the library’s facilities and performs a variety of administrative and technical functions in support of New Braunfels Public Library operations.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

Library Assistant I (Part time only) - 14117

  • Staffs the service desk.
  • Performs a variety of circulation duties – including answering calls, patron inquiries, check in/check out and shelving, card issuance, material location, collecting library fees and patron computer assistance (public computers, online catalogs, library databases and mobile devices).
  • Participates in opening and closing duties.
  • Assist with material preparation and repair as assigned. Evaluates and recommends library items for repair, rebinding, and/or replacement and assists with same tasks.
  • Aids in the promotion of library programs/events.
  • Answers reference questions or refers reference inquiries to the Librarian on Duty as appropriate.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Library Assistant II (Part time and Full time) – 14119/14118

  • May be required to complete all or some of the duties listed for Assistant I.
  • Has been a Library Assistant for at least 2 years, at this library or another library.
  • Assists patrons with library technology and software.
  • Assists with ILS reporting, material problem management and cash management.
  • Staffs the children’s desk.

Library Assistant III (Part time and Full time) – 14122/14121

  • May be required to complete all or some of the duties listed for Assistant II
  • Has been a Library Assistant for at least 5 years, at this library or another library.
  • Assists in coordinating and implementing library programs/events.
  • Compiles data and prepares/generates a variety of statistical library reports.
  • Assists with training of staff and patrons with library technology and software.
  • Assists with development/maintenance of procedure documentation.
  • Assists with training and supervision of the public services volunteers.
  • Assists Customer Experience Manager with material problems, customer issues and training of the Library Assistants.
  • Assists with Outreach activities and customer outreach programs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

Two (2) years of college and two (2) years public library/customer service experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Bilingual (Spanish) highly preferred.

Required Licenses or Certifications:

None.

Required skill in:

  • Performing a variety of administrative and technical library duties.
  • Assisting in ensuring the delivery of high-quality library services to patrons.
  • Staffing the children’s desk and circulation/reference desk and providing assistance to patrons.
  • Preparing library correspondence and maintaining accurate patron records.
  • Processing and maintaining assigned library materials.
  • Providing excellent customer service to the public in a library setting.

Computer Skills Required:

  • Intermediate skills using Microsoft Office Suite, web browsing/searching, printing/scanning/copying.
  • Fundamental skills using: Smartphone, tablets, troubleshooting/problem solving skills.

Additional skills and abilities:

This position requires strong interpersonal skills, particularly courtesy in dealing with the public and coworkers, a working knowledge of general office procedures, the ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, flexibility in work schedule and a positive work attitude.

Physical Demands / Work Environment:

  • Work is performed in an office environment and is subject to sitting, standing, bending, walking, kneeling and reaching for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to safely pull or push loaded book carts; and safely lift and carry items weighing up to forty (40) pounds.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends.
  • May be required to work immediately before, during, or after an emergency or disaster.
