Position Summary: This recruitment will be used to fill two part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Student Desk Consultant positions for the Valley Library Borrowing & Information Desk Unit at Oregon State University (OSU).
Position Duties: The position is within the Valley Library, Library Experience & Access Department, Borrowing & Information Desk Unit. The position provides a wide range of support and services to students, staff, faculty, and the general public via face-to-face, virtual, and telephone interactions. Responsibilities include:
- Providing informational, borrowing, reference, and research assistance, along with courteous and friendly general customer service.
- Maintaining patron confidentiality and communicating effectively.
- Explaining and following general library policies.
- Processing and maintaining library collections and materials.
- Using and instructing on a variety of library-specific software, webpages, and databases.
- Assisting with opening and/or closing the building.
- Troubleshooting minor computer, scanner, and printer problems.
- Assisting with other projects as assigned.
After a year or more of employment, additional position duties could include: 1) Head desk student responsibilities, 2) processing electronic course reserves, and/or 3) supporting the 3D printing desk.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study.
- Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment.
- Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard:
- High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program.
- Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term.
- Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term.
- Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term.
- Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term.
Additional Required Qualifications:
- Experience working with and supporting people from diverse backgrounds, experiences, and/or perspectives.
- Ability to communicate effectively to instruct others and support a team of coworkers.
- Willingness to work during dead and finals week.
- Willingness to work days, nights, and weekends.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Comfortable exploring and troubleshooting new technologies.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule: Student employees work daytime, evening, and weekend hours between 7am and midnight.
