DESCRIPTION

DEFINITION:

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
The Librarian I is a journey level classification, responsible for orienting patrons to library procedures, practices, resources and specialized information sources. This classification is distinguished from the next higher classification of Librarian II in that the latter has broader responsibilities with overall library supervision and delivery of programs and services. Positions in this class series are flexibly staffed and positions at the Librarian II level are normally filled by advancement from the Librarian I level with three (3) years of increasingly responsible library experience and responsibility for a major library collection or activity, functional cross training in other library service areas, meeting the educational requirements, and successful performance reviews. The decision to fill the higher-level Librarian II position is at the Department Head's discretion. Work schedule may include evenings and weekends.

Receives general supervision from the Library Services Supervisor. Incumbents in the classification do not routinely exercise supervision but may provide functional and technical supervision and training for staff and volunteers.

The position also requires dexterity and coordination for fine manipulation for grasping and repetitive hand movement for tasks such as handling files and single pieces of paper, or in preparing and retrieving statistical reports and data using a computer keyboard. Some reaching for items above or below desk level. Additionally, the position requires both near and far vision in reading correspondence, written reports and work-related documents. Acute hearing is required when providing phone and personal service. The incumbent in this position may be required to drive a City vehicle. The need to lift, drag and push files, paper, book carts, boxes of books, and donated materials, and documents weighing up to 25 pounds is also required, as well as speech sufficient to communicate in group settings without the aid of a microphone.

Operations require almost continuous attention. Strong cognitive abilities and remaining alert and aware of surroundings are necessary for problem-solving, working through assignments, and safety. Environmental
Work is performed in a standard office setting, with direct contract with the public. Environment is generally indoors and clean, with limited exposure to dust, fumes, odors or noise. - Assists in the development and implementation of special programs and services.
- Participates in the preparation and presentation of workshops and training for staff development. •Participates in collection development in assigned areas, including selection, weeding and maintenance of materials; catalogs and classifies library materials; recommends, maintains and continually updates knowledge of new and existing library materials and resources.
- Prepares bibliographic guides to the Library's collections; compiles, catalogs and classifies information materials.
