About the Role

ASI is seeking an experienced Technical Communicator to guide users of all backgrounds through the operation of complex unmanned vehicle systems. This role primarily involves software documentation but may also include physical installation and repair instructions.

Let's be clear: We're not writing manuals for toaster ovens. We're writing manuals for robotic vehicles of all shapes and sizes, from small security bots to 400-ton trucks.

This is a fast-paced, exciting, and cutting-edge role. Success requires proactiveness, self-motivation, and sharp critical thinking. You must be a writer, listener, and diplomat, collaborating with multiple teams to produce high-quality documentation that is both technical and accessible.

The ideal candidate will have experience with structured authoring tools, technical documentation platforms, and version control systems. They should be comfortable working with engineers, product managers, and testers to ensure technical accuracy and clarity.

Job Duties

Technical Writing & Documentation Development

• Write and maintain software and hardware documentation, including installation guides, user manuals, and training materials.
• Create structured documentation in Paligo, a tool similar to MadCap Flare, Docbook, and DITA.
• Work within Jira to track and manage documentation tasks alongside development teams.
• Collaborate with subject matter experts, engineers, and product managers to ensure content accuracy and completeness.

Technical Illustrations & Visual Content

• Develop computer-generated images, technical diagrams, and illustrations to complement written documentation.
• Use Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Draw.io, and OnShape to create and enhance visual assets.
• Ensure all visuals meet ASI's branding and documentation standards.

Content Management & Version Control

• Maintain version-controlled documentation using Paligo's built-in versioning system.
• Manage documentation lifecycle through review assignments in Paligo, coordinating feedback from engineers, developers, and testers.
• Ensure proper integration of documentation with ASI's product development process.

Process Improvement & Adaptability

• Continuously improve documentation workflows and adapt to new tools and methodologies.
• Gather internal feedback to refine content usability and effectiveness.
• Stay updated on technical writing best practices and emerging documentation technologies.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Communications, Technical Writing, Engineering, or 4 years of professional work experience in a related field.
• Experience with structured authoring tools such as Paligo, MadCap Flare, Docbook or similar tools.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and familiarity with Confluence.
• Experience creating and managing documentation in Jira workflows.
• Ability to create technical illustrations and diagrams using Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Draw.io, OnShape, or similar tools.
• Strong ability to write clear, concise, and error-free documentation.
• Enthusiasm for learning new technologies and adapting to new tools.
• Strong attention to detail, organization, and ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams.
• Knowledge of automation, robotics, or industrial systems is a plus but not required.
