St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church of Jasper, Indiana, a parish of 1700 families in the Diocese of Evansville, seeks a qualified candidate for a Director of Music and Worship. The candidate should be comfortable at both organ and piano and work well with cantors, choirs, and musicians of all ages and abilities. St. Joseph Catholic Church has music for four Sunday Liturgies including a Spanish Mass. The applicant must be fluent in the English language, and knowledge of the Spanish language would be an asset but not required. The position requires familiarity with the Catholic Liturgy. Job Qualifications:

  1. Must be fluent in the English language. Knowledge of Spanish would be an asset.
  2. A master’s degree in music is preferred.
  3. Must be a proficient organist and piano/keyboard player.
  4. Preferably 2 years’ experience in Liturgy Planning.
  5. The ability to lead and conduct a choir.
  6. Experience in supervision of staff (staffed musicians).
  7. The ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
  8. The ability to work well with others.
  9. The ability to give as well as receive direction.
  10. Strong organizational skills.
  11. Decision-making skills.
  12. The ability to operate basic office equipment.
  13. Knowledge of basic computer software programs.

Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • The candidate will be responsible for providing quality music for the parish, working closely with the pastor and the Liturgy Commission regarding liturgy planning and music selection for the Saturday Vigil Mass, Sunday Masses, and Holy Days of Obligation, as well as other assigned Masses or events.
  • Directs Music Ministry ensembles and activities: This includes regular contact with ministry volunteers and employed musicians, coordinating and directing employees and volunteers for the Saturday Vigil Mass and Sunday Masses (3 English, 1 Spanish), and any special Masses and events when needed.
  • Directs (sing/play) provide quality music as scheduled:
    4:30 P.M. Saturday Vigil Mass at St. Joseph Church
    9:00 A.M. Sunday Mass at St. Joseph Church
    10:30 A.M. Sunday Spanish Mass at St. Joseph Church
    6:00 P.M. Sunday Mass at St. Joseph Church
  • Directs for all major feasts and events: At the discretion of the pastor, the choir or musicians may be asked to participate in other events.
  • Ongoing planning of music for liturgies: Music will be selected for Sunday Masses, special feasts, and events with approval by the pastor.
  • Liturgy Meetings: The candidate will attend monthly Liturgy committee meetings with the pastor to discuss music and liturgical aspects of the Mass.
  • Staff Meetings: Attendance at the weekly staff meeting is expected (currently Thursday 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM) unless excused by the pastor.
  • Manages the office of Music Ministry: This includes fielding music-related inquiries and addressing business-related activities within the music office.
  • Interview/Audition potential employees and volunteer ministers: Ensures that prospective new hires meet with HR to complete new hire paperwork and requirements prior to the date of hire.
  • Recruitment of Music Ministers: Develop creative ways to recruit and retain volunteer ministers to the music ministry.
  • Organize/Arrange/Order music for the ministry: Ensures that all ensembles have in their possession the music they are performing for that weekend Mass/event.
  • Song sheets/Worship aides: Creates song sheets/worship aides for Masses and other liturgical events.
  • Music Library: Responsible for the upkeep of the Music Library.
  • Compensation: Ensures that employed musicians receive compensation for Masses/events they worked.
  • Budgeting: Works closely with the Bookkeeper regarding the annual budget.
  • Oversees sound and technology: Responsible for church sound and technology as directed by the pastor.

Back-up: Responsible for securing a backup if an unexpected absence occurs or time off is granted by the pastor.

  • All absences must be reported to the pastor in writing.
  • Requests for time off must be granted by the pastor in advance.

Weekly Choir Rehearsals: Choir rehearsals are to be weekly unless permission is granted by the pastor to change the schedule or cancel a rehearsal.

Terms of Employment: Applicants shall exhibit behavior and lifestyle values in accordance with Catholic teachings. Being of the Catholic faith is preferred but not necessary. All employees must comply with the provisions of the Safe Environment Program of the Diocese of Evansville.

Compensation: $60,000 to $75,000 salary with benefits.
