Job Overview

We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Customs Entry Writer to join our clients team in New York. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of customs regulations, exceptional organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently. This role is critical to ensuring compliance with customs laws and facilitating the smooth import/export of goods for our clients.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Customs Documentation:
    • Prepare and submit accurate customs entries for imports and exports.
    • Ensure compliance with all applicable customs regulations and trade laws.
    • Verify the accuracy of shipping documents, including commercial invoices, packing lists, and bills of lading.
  2. Classification and Valuation:
    • Classify goods according to the Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS).
    • Determine the correct valuation of goods for customs purposes.
  3. Communication and Coordination:
    • Liaise with customs brokers, freight forwarders, and clients to resolve any issues related to customs clearance.
    • Communicate with government agencies, such as Customs and Border Protection (CBP), as needed.
  4. Record Keeping and Reporting:
    • Maintain accurate and organized records of all customs entries and related documentation.
    • Generate reports on customs activities and compliance status.
  5. Compliance and Audits:
    • Stay updated on changes in customs regulations and ensure company practices remain compliant.
    • Assist in internal and external audits related to customs activities.

Requirements

  1. Experience:
    • Minimum of 2–3 years of experience in customs entry writing or a related role.
    • Familiarity with customs regulations, HTS codes, and trade compliance.
  2. Skills:
    • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
    • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
    • Proficiency in customs software and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook).
  3. Knowledge:
    • In-depth understanding of customs processes, including entry filing, classification, and valuation.
    • Knowledge of CBP regulations and other government agency requirements (e.g., FDA, USDA).
  4. Attributes:
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
    • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
    • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification in Customs Compliance (e.g., Certified Customs Specialist - CCS).
  • Experience working with ACE (Automated Commercial Environment).
  • Knowledge of international trade agreements and free trade zones.
