About the Organization
The New Jersey Environmental Justice Alliance (NJEJA) is a People of Color (POC)-led organization dedicated to advancing environmental justice at local, regional, and national levels. NJEJA collaborates with front-line community groups, social and environmental justice organizations, foundations, government agencies, and other coalitions to develop policies and practices that support New Jersey’s most vulnerable communities.
Role Overview
NJEJA seeks an experienced and highly organized consultant Grant Writer to support our mission by crafting compelling grant proposals, securing funding, and ensuring grant compliance. The consultant will work closely with NJEJA’s Executive Team and programmatic staff to develop and implement strategies that enhance the organization’s sustainability and growth. The position will involve assisting with the development, writing, and management of proposals and related reporting requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience writing and managing grant processes for a non-profit, ideally within the social justice, environmental justice, or community-based fields.
- Strong ability to craft persuasive, clear, and accurate written proposals and reports.
- Experience drafting and tracking multiple grant applications from diverse funding sources simultaneously and meeting tight deadlines.
- Ability to adapt writing style to align with the organization’s voice, mission, and community-centered approach.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively within a team.
- Initiative-driven, with a proven track record of successfully completing projects.
- A well-developed understanding of social and environmental justice issues and a commitment to advancing equity.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with NJEJA staff to develop, write, and submit high-quality grant proposals and narratives to secure funding, ensuring alignment with NJEJA’s mission, voice, and community-driven approach.
- Manage the creation and submission of assigned proposals, renewals, progress reports, and other necessary documentation.
- Write and manage between 1-3 proposals and 1-3 reports per month.
- Develop templates and boilerplate language to be reused for proposals and reports.
- Research and track all deadlines and specific requirements for grant submissions, ensuring that all necessary components are included in each application. For government grants, assist with completing any required forms and paperwork to ensure NJEJA’s eligibility for funding.
- Possess a clear understanding of various funding types and utilize this knowledge to interpret funding guidelines, advise NJEJA on compliance, reporting, and other applicable requirements, and ensure adherence to key practices and legal considerations in grants administration.
- Coordinate with the Director of Operations to manage grant submission schedules. Assist in maintaining up-to-date funder contact information, login details, and grant application and reporting timelines within the Instrumentl database.
- Work with the Executive Team to request extensions and modifications when necessary.

- Examples of successful grant sources from which you have secured funding, including specific details on funding sources, amounts, and the purposes of the grants
- References, including at least two clients within the past two years
- Proposed fee structure for services

Compensation
Please supply your bid as part of your application package. Compensation will be based on the applicant’s qualifications and proposal.
