Hiring Range: $20.00 - $25.00
This is a non-exempt (hourly) position. Pay rates are based on education, skill, experience level and internal equity.

The Myers Park Library serves a close-knit community in Charlotte’s historic Myers Park neighborhood. As the city’s oldest library, it has long been a cherished institution for many customers. This location offers specialized, high-level research assistance—particularly for college students and genealogy enthusiasts. Additionally, the Myers Park Branch is trusted by its customers for daily Readers’ Advisory services and personalized technology support.

The Library Associate works within the branch team to create a welcoming and engaging environment for youth services. The Library Associate leads age-appropriate programs for babies, toddlers, preschool, school age and preteens. This position represents the library in the community and facilitates outreach to various area partners. The Library Associate participates in systemwide teams and works collaboratively with staff in Children’s Services. Demonstrated success in building and sustaining collaborative partnerships with both the library community and external organizations is essential. The incumbent will also be responsible for staffing a busy information desk, serving customers of all ages.

Myers Park Library is committed to providing exemplary service to all customers through technology, computer assistance, research, and readers’ advisory from a single service desk. The Library Associate serves as a regular manager-on-duty.

Schedule: includes a minimum of one evening shift per week and a rotating weekend schedule.

Position Summary:
Perform professional and technical library work in one or more specific library programs such as Adult, Teens, Youth, Reference Services, or Library Systems Administration. The Library Associate delivers a high level of quality library services ensuring the provision of value-added experiences for all customers.

Essential Functions:

  1. Programming for children ages 0 - 12
  2. Build and maintain relationships with outreach sites and partnerships
  3. Prepare monthly program reports and statistics
  4. Provide research assistance to customers
  5. Utilize integrated library systems software
  6. Provide service desk coverage
  7. Maintain library’s collection of materials including repairs, shelving, and marketing
  8. Promote and market library’s programs, collaborating with Marketing and Communication to generate flyers and materials pertaining to programs
  9. Create and maintain attractive and appropriate bulletin boards and displays

Minimum Qualifications

Experience:
Minimum of two years of library, retail, education, or customer service experience

Education:
High School Diploma or equivalent

Education/Experience:
Combination of relevant education and relevant experience accepted? Yes

Preferred Qualifications:

Bilingual - Spanish communication skills (speaking, listening, reading, and writing)
Experience working with youth

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:
Alpha-numeric sorting systems, Various library systems, Telephone etiquette, Young adult literature and developmental stages of teenagers

Skills:
Technology adeptness, Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills, Excellent time management skills with attention to detail

Abilities:
Adaptability, Communication, Collaboration, Technical/professional Knowledge and Skills, Work Standards

Computer Skills:
Proficient in various computer applications including Microsoft Office Suite

Work Environment:
Works in an office setting with moderate noise; Travel to and from outreach locations
