Job Overview
The Librarian offers a library program to develop a culture of literacy and inquiry to promote student success and lifelong learning. The librarian empowers students and staff to become effective users of ideas and information; to help them acquire literacy, inquiry, and digital learning skills.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Information Literacy

  • Evaluate, select and order new instructional materials, both print and digital, that meet the needs of the library program and meet defined district policy and procedures.
  • Provide instruction in research skills and inquiry methods to students and staff.
  • Library Media Specialist provides opportunities to help learners become creative problem solvers and independent users and producers of ideas and information.

Inquiry

  • Collaborate with teachers to plan and deliver instruction that supports the curriculum.
  • The librarian provides instruction based on the inquiry approach to learning.
  • The Library Media Specialist promotes student inquiry to pursue, create, and share knowledge.
  • The Library Media Specialist offers professional development opportunities that promote best practices in inquiry-based teaching and learning.

Reading

  • The Library Media Specialist encourages the learning community to read a variety of literature for information and pleasure to develop their reading life.
  • The Library Media Specialist elevates literacy instruction through participation in national, state, and local reading initiatives.
  • Library Media Specialist develops a collection reflective of diversity, student choice, and reading for information.

Digital Learning

  • Protect the intellectual freedom of students and staff following defined FBISD policy and procedures.
  • The Library Media Specialist uses and promotes the use of digital resources and technologies across content areas for discovery, collaboration, critical analysis, creation, and presentation of learning.
  • The Library Media Specialist offers creative, innovative, and ethical use of current and emerging technologies.

Environment

  • Report to and plan with the principal to establish library goals and support campus goals.
  • Create and maintain a positive and welcoming climate in the library.
  • Develop procedures for circulation of library materials and use of the library facility.
  • Maintain current collection through selection, inventory, and weeding of materials.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Utilize best practices to plan and develop the school library program.
  • Provide a cohesive, comprehensive campus Library program servicing the needs of campus and district users.
  • Provide formal and informal instruction to students and staff in the access and use of library instructional resources.
  • Maintain lines of communication with the district library administrators, including attendance at library meetings and in-service.
  • Manage and coordinate job duties and expectations for library paraprofessional staff, student workers, and volunteers.
  • Develop and manage the library budget following defined district policy and procedures.
  • Model effective strategies for developing multiple literacies.
  • Remain current in professional practices and developments, information technologies, and educational research applicable to school library programs.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • Master's Degree must have completed at least 12 hours of graduate study in a Library degree program leading to a Master's Degree in Library and/or Information Science or related field; must be able to complete the School Librarian degree and certification within 2 years.
  • Valid Teaching Certification Issued by Texas Education Agency appropriate to subject and grade level of assignment.
  • Minimum of 2 years Classroom teaching experience.

Work involves everyday risks and discomforts which require normal safety precautions when operating equipment or performing job duties. May work prolonged or irregular hours and must be able to maintain emotional control under stress.
