We have an outstanding opportunity for a Managing Editor to be responsible for implementing KUOW’s editorial strategy, leading and supervising a team of editors to enhance the quantity and quality of KUOW enterprise journalism on broadcast and digital platforms.
JOB SUCCESS SUMMARY
The Managing Editor is a key leader in KUOW’s newsroom. You are an advocate for the audience and champion of the reporting staff, upholding and raising the standards of KUOW’s original audio journalism. You enjoy and excel at enterprise and feature news reporting and are driven to find new and untold stories.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Management and supervision (65%):
- Supervise and lead a team of KUOW editors
- Collaborate with news managers to plan coverage for broadcast and digital audiences
- Coach editors and reporters to produce compelling audio journalism for broadcast and digital
- Ensure deadlines and output requirements are being met
- Enforce editorial priorities and standards set by the News Director
- Approve stories for broadcast
- Participate in newsroom editorial planning and in shaping newsroom priorities and initiatives
- Ensure adherence to KUOW editorial and ethics policies
- Coordinate with KUOW digital and daily news desks
- Contribute to advancing strategic scope of KUOW editorial coverage
- Develop stories that reach diverse audiences
- Staff development (25%):
- Support the growth and development of KUOW beat reporters
- Help to recruit, hire, retain and develop a diverse newsroom staff
- Hold regular one-on-one meetings with direct reports and conduct annual performance reviews
- Recruit, mentor, coach and lead professional development
- Cultivate a team culture of high motivation, collaboration, creativity, and engagement
- Lead with outstanding communication skills
- Special projects and other duties as assigned (10%):
- Attend and participate in department or organization meetings
- Support internal station initiatives
- Troubleshoot and help solve newsroom editorial and staffing challenges

SUCCESS PROFILE:
- Demonstrated ability to direct, motivate, inspire and lead a team
- Demonstrated news judgment
- Familiarity with and appreciation for public media programming
- Strong writing, editing, and production for broadcast and digital
Requirements include:
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism, digital media or a related field and four to seven years of professional experience including management and story editing
- Knowledge of professional broadcast and journalistic standards and practices
Working Conditions:
- Duties may occasionally require evening and weekend work
- Cubicle/open workspace environment
- Ability to travel when necessary
