OVERVIEW

Associated Students, Inc. employs student-focused professionals with equity-mindsets. ASI is considered a part of the Cal Poly Pomona Division of Student Affairs with a dashed reporting line to Administrative Affairs. ASI serves the entire campus population, including over 27,000 students, by providing opportunities for student engagement, student employment, and a multitude of programs and services such as recreation and wellness, student union and activities, student government, and childcare. ASI operational support areas include human resources, financial services, information technology, facilities management, and marketing. ASI is engaged in the work of being a learning organization. Founded in 1995, the award-winning Marketing & Strategic Communications team maintains its creativity and dynamic marketing strategies through an experienced, talented team of students and professional staff in combination with the use of today's most cutting-edge technology. Its goal is to connect their clients to their respective audiences with a fresh and innovative solution. Marketing & Strategic Communications not only serves all ASI's internal marketing needs, but it also provides the campus and local community the opportunity to utilize their experience-driven, competitively priced, design and marketing communications services as well. Some of the services the team provides are digital bulletin boards advertisements, social media marketing, and design of logos, brochures, and posters.

POSITION DEFINITION

The Junior Designer provides support to ASI's dynamic communications and marketing team. Under general supervision of the Design Coordinator and additional day-to-day supervision from the Junior Designer Supervisor, the Junior Designer is responsible for translating concepts and ideas into functional graphic design assets for ASI and university-wide marketing purposes, as well as developing and creating graphics to maintain and support ASI's brand and visual identity across all online and off-line mediums.

The Junior Designer performs routine and non-routine tasks requiring independent judgement and decision-making in support of Associated Students Incorporated's dynamic communications and marketing team. This position will require an understanding of the marketing team's various needs and dynamics and will involve close collaboration with various internal and external constituents. Along with their creative responsibilities, the Junior Designer will take part in professional development through assigned tasks, video tutorials, and other methods of learning. This position is designed for the Visual Communication Design major. Preference will be given to students enrolled in VCD 1311A, 1321A, 1341A, 1312A, 1331A, and/or 1351A.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Creative/Artistic Responsibility
  • Adapts and prepares designs for print, social media, and digital applications
  • Assist in photography selection and manipulation, including masking, resizing, recoloring, etc.
  • Assist with developing original marketing assets
  • Assist with design updates and edits
  • Prepare mockups for merchandise and production needs
  • Prepares artwork for proofing and production
  • Maintains and encourages proper application of ASI's visual brand identity
  • Work with Production team to resolve production artwork issues
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Organizational Responsibility
  • Maintain organizational file structure for all design related files
  • Communicate with requestors, clients, and Junior Designer Supervisor to complete projects
  • Participate in team meetings

Technical
  • Take part in regular professional development trainings and opportunities

Collaboration and Partnerships
  • Provide creative insight for projects related to print, experiential, environmental, social media, and digital media
  • Work closely with the Junior Designer Supervisor, Senior Designers, and Production team to complete assignments
  • Collaborate with the Senior Design team, as needed, to develop and create graphics to support ASI's brand and visual identity

    • VCD 1321A Foundations in 2D Design
    • VCD 1341A Foundations in 4D Design
    • VCD 1312A Foundations in Drawing 2
    • VCD 1331A - Foundations in 3D Design
    • VCD 1351A - Foundations in 5D Design

BACKGROUND CHECK

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can begin employment with Associated Students, Inc., Cal Poly Pomona. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status of applicants or continued employment of current ASI employees who apply for this position.

EMPLOYMENT ELIGIBILITY

Employment with ASI is open to any Cal Poly Pomona student who is at least 16 years old and of legal status to work in the United States. In addition, the employee must be currently enrolled for at least 6.0 units (undergraduate) and 4.0 units (graduate), international student employees must be enrolled in a minimum of 12.0 units (undergraduate) and 6.0 units (graduate) at the end of the drop-add period, have a minimum 2.0 GPA (both Cal Poly Pomona and overall GPA) and be in good standing with the University. Individuals enrolled only in Extended University are not eligible for hire. Exceptions to the unit load requirement are allowed during the summer and winter semesters and for students who have applied for graduation for the current semester.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk and hear; manual dexterity, eye-hand coordination, and verbal communication; use of office equipment: telephones, calculator, copier and fax. Must be able to walk, stand, bend and lift to 45 pounds.

Position subject to an occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens. Annual bloodborne pathogen training is required. The initial training must be completed before the employee is assigned duties that may result in exposure to blood or bodily fluids. Hepatitis B vaccination will be offered after the training.
