Title: Technical Designer, Apparel
Location: Washington, D.C.
Salary: Competitive salary and benefits package based on qualifications; classified as full-time salaried; exempt and not eligible for overtime.
Reports to: Meg Rupp, Senior Technical Designer
Travel: Occasional travel may be required
Position Overview
We are searching for a passionate and detail-oriented technical designer to join the Tuckernuck team. In this role, you will examine sketches and analyze design ideas to evaluate their feasibility, collaborate with designers, manufacturers, and vendors, and use your skills and expert eye to ensure that the best products are produced. You will be a key player in the sample fitting process and recommend fit changes for product production. A successful technical designer will be passionate, fashion-forward, and possess great technical acumen. Ideal candidates should be deadline-driven, have a keen eye for detail, and demonstrate sound knowledge of industry-related software.
Core Responsibilities
- Collaborate with designers, manufacturers, vendors, and clients to ensure that product specifications are viable;
- Play a major role in the sample fittings for several product categories and recommend fit changes and garment spec changes needed to execute the best product in production;
- Communicate with factory vendors for any corrections in a timely fashion;
- Analyze and examine designs and determine required resources and project deadlines;
- Implement design changes and make contingency plans as necessary;
- Visit manufacturing sites and report back to product developer;
- Establish quality control standards;
- Ensure all products are high-quality and that they conform to Tuckernuck standards and brand values;
- Evaluate prototypes and inspect finished products to ensure that they are free from defects and inline with product specifications;
- Adhere to all the quality control requirements and standards;
- Stay up to date with the latest techniques in the development of garments.
Minimum Qualifications
- 3-5 years of experience as a Technical Designer, or a similar role
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Strong technical knowledge of pattern making and garment construction;
- The ability to justify design changes and possess excellent problem solving skills;
- Strong negotiation and interpersonal skills;
- Deadline-driven and committed to quality;
- Practical experience with software like Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and CAD.
