WUSA9, TEGNA’s flagship CBS station in Washington, D.C., is looking for a smart, self-starting Digital Editor who can write, create and produce exciting content for its many digital platforms.

The ideal candidate for this position is an innovative journalist with strong news judgement who thrives in a fast-paced environment and loves to inspire, inform and make a positive impact on our audience. They are an agile thinker with the ability to react quickly to changing circumstances and an exemplary writer who wants to make our audiences smarter – and do it with style. The ideal candidate also brings a multitude of talents to the table, including the ability to edit video, create social graphics and track down information through interviews, public records searches and social media postings.

This position requires producing original content for multiple WUSA9 platforms including the website, mobile app and streaming app as well as various social media platforms. The ideal candidate will also be responsible for responding quickly to breaking news and managing content produced by others, including copy editing for our various desktop/mobile/social platforms.

Responsibilities:

  1. Write and post stories to all WUSA9 digital/mobile/social platforms
  2. Report news as it happens online (strong breaking news skills) and generate digital traffic through social media and SEO skills.
  3. Monitor news releases, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other online news sources
  4. Use social media mining tools to discover unique content
  5. Aggregate content for streaming platforms
  6. Work with all newsroom departments on content coverage, broadcast-digital coordination and social listening
  7. Coordinate live streams of news events with a heavy emphasis on breaking news
  8. Send push alerts to breaking news stories/ high-interest content
  9. Identify compelling, unique stories and user-generated content of interest to our audience
  10. Pitch story ideas in daily editorial meetings
  11. Source and create enterprise stories for all WUSA9 platforms

Requirements:

  1. A clear understanding of the tenets of professional journalism, as well as high standards of journalistic integrity and ethics
  2. Degree in journalism, communications or a related field, or equivalent professional experience
  3. Prior newsroom experience, with at least 1-3 years digital experience
  4. Excellent writing (stories, social, push notifications), editing and proofreading skills
  5. Strong knowledge of AP Style
  6. Knowledge of SEO best practices and how to implement
  7. Proficiency in running social media accounts, video optimization or livestreaming a plus
  8. Excellent communication and time management skills
  9. Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  10. Ability to prioritize and manage requests from various sources with an ability to work well with varied personalities within deadlines
  11. Self-starter who can also work well as a member of a team
  12. Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and/or holidays, as warranted by vacations/breaking news coverage

Pay Range:

$31.25 - $34.61 USD

Our 401(k) program offers full, part-time and temporary employees the opportunity to contribute 1% - 80% of their pay on a pre-tax basis to TEGNA’s 401(k). Contributions made up to the first 4% of pay are eligible for a 100% match from the company and are 100% vested from day one.

Regardless of participation in TEGNA medical plans, ALL employees and their eligible family members receive nine free virtual doctor’s appointments with a physician through Teladoc, and 12 free annual therapy sessions with a licensed clinician through Spring Health.
