About this opportunity:
Assists the Development Director with fulfilling donor relations, public relations and community relations duties as required of the Development Department. Manages volunteer and staff bell-ring activities for Red Kettles, as well as community outreach activities with Hillsborough County schools and other organizations. Recruits and trains volunteers to assist in performing program work and disaster relief work, when needed.
Key Responsibilities:
- Generates story ideas and drafts news releases for review by Director of Development on a regular basis. Creates public awareness of Salvation Army programs, activities, accomplishments, events and needs. Participates in PR Committee meetings.
- Serves as a liaison to the news media and public, setting forth a clear image of The Salvation Army programs, services, and special events. Maintains contact with all local news media (including print, radio and television). Work on identifying pro-bono media opportunities to share news of the Salvation Army programs.
- Interacts professionally with community supporters, including Advisor Board, Auxiliary, donors, members of the media, etc. Assists with special events planned and organized by the Development Department.
- Provides donor research to identify major gift prospects, determine gift potential, memberships, relationships, education, vocational or other linkages to The Salvation Army.
- Manage the Red Kettle Bell-Ringing employees and volunteers; process by recruiting new volunteer groups, keeps existing groups involved, keeps track of kettle staffers and daily kettle totals; makes scheduling changes when necessary.
- Performs other related work as assigned.
What we are looking for in you:
Education and Experience:
- Four-year college degree in public relations, marketing, communications or related field preferred AND
- Four years progressively responsible experience performing public relations functions and coordinating social service programs OR
- Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Ability to meet attendance requirements.
- Ability to read, write, and effectively communicate the English language.
- Work is usually performed in a normal office environment where there are little or no physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like, but may be performed periodically in disaster service areas and camp settings.
