POSITION PURPOSE
The mission of the Office of Marketing and Communications is to elevate and protect the California State University, Bakersfield brand and inform and inspire the community through storytelling. The department, which is under the Office of the President, works to drive engagement between the university and key target audiences in this region and beyond.
Under general supervision of the Director of Marketing & Communications, the Videographer/Photographer performs a full range of assignments related to production projects in photography, video or other multimedia. The incumbent is responsible for improving visual storytelling at the university and capturing creative, high-quality photos and video for a variety of platforms, including web, email, social media, television, events and other venues. This position is responsible for all stages of production, including planning, storyboarding, scheduling, writing, directing, shooting, staging and editing productions. The incumbent coordinates production activities with support staff and students as needed as well as serving as a lead to multimedia student assistants.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Video Production:
- Plan videos, schedule video shoots, write scripts, storyboard content and coordinate with a variety of subjects requiring the regular use of judgement and discretion to interpret needs and make production decisions.
- Set timelines, determine desired video composition, perform interviews or preliminary research and adjust content to achieve desired effect.
- Using considerable ingenuity, brainstorm and execute videos that elevate the university brand, such as student success stories, donor impact stories, fundraising videos, videos for key university events, alumni features, and more.
- Operate video cameras and make technical decisions regarding appropriate lighting, shooting angles, placements, sound, etc.
- Capture high-quality, candid/action video and maintain a library of b-roll.
- Film speeches and campus messages for university leadership and other stakeholders.
- Document campus life regularly, staying alert and ready to capture unplanned multimedia storytelling opportunities.
- Edit and assemble final visual/audio material, ensuring brand consistency across all productions.
- Produce a variety of video (short-form and long-form) for various platforms, such as television, advertisements, websites, social media, email newsletters, events, etc.
- Maintain university YouTube/video hosting accounts and keep video files organized.
- Ensure videos are accessible to people with disabilities (e.g. captioned, etc.).
- Advise campus units on videography best practices through collaboration and training.
- Keep abreast on videography best practices and take part in training opportunities.
- Train, advise and provide lead work direction to multimedia student assistants.
- Collect and maintain signatures for video model release forms.
Photography:
- Produce high-quality photography for a wide range of university digital and print mediums that reflect the university’s visual identity.
- Arrange photoshoots, including identifying location, equipment and participants.
- Capture creative candid/action photos that exemplify vibrant student life and academic experiences.
- Document campus life, quickly identifying unplanned opportunities for photo storytelling.
- Plan and produce photography for key university events and provide images for departments and offices when required.
- Capture headshots, group photos or other planned photos needed for university business.
- Optimize lighting and composition of university photography.
- Store photos in organized, accessible formats, ensuring images are named correctly, tagged and that the photo archive is maintained.
- Maintain photographic equipment.
- Advise campus units on photography best practices.
- Keep abreast on photography best practices and take part in training opportunities.
- Collect and maintain signatures for photo model release forms.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE – Bachelor’s degree in a related field and two (2) years of experience in still and motion picture photography, including a thorough knowledge of video production techniques.
LICENSES – Possession of a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain by date of hire.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES (SKA’s) –
- Regular and reliable attendance is required.
- Strong time management skills and the capacity to schedule and meet high pressure production deadlines is critical.
- Thorough knowledge of the full range of production techniques including sound recording, graphics, television, photography, videotaping, lighting, editing methods and equipment.
- Ability to set up and operate a wide variety of production equipment, including set-up for multi-camera video productions.
- Ability to learn techniques in the development of television, film, radio or multimedia productions.
- Computer skills to operate digital and analog production-related editing and duplication equipment.
- Solid to advanced photographic capabilities, as well as photographic processing and manipulation skills. Knowledge and understanding of film speed, light, and color requirements.
- Ability to use and maintain studio, camera, and related equipment.
- Well-developed organizational skills to work on multiple projects simultaneously in a deadline-driven environment.
- Prior experience or proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite Software, knowledgeable of Final Cut Pro in various editions, various types of cameras including; DSLR camera equipment (including stabilizers, tripods, audio equipment, lighting), and motion software.
- Proven editing and storytelling skills with demonstrated experience taking a project from ideation to production and strong organizational skills to develop storyboards and shot lists.
- Ability to develop, create, stage and/or produce professional quality visuals and evaluate production effectiveness in meeting objectives.
- Working knowledge of tools for authoring interactive multimedia products delivered via a variety of synchronous and asynchronous techniques.
- Strong research skills and broad knowledge of resources and techniques which communicate information through multimedia productions.
- Ability to understand operating procedures and underlying technology to use and troubleshoot equipment and systems.
- Ability to provide lead work and project direction to other staff.
- Ability to work with and train students involved in production projects.
- Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism.
- Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
- Ability to initiate, establish and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
- Excellent communication skills; ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner.
- Thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation.
- Ability to interpret, communicate and apply policies and procedures.
- Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
- Excellent computer skills and competence with a variety of computer applications including word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, on-line systems, internet as well as online calendaring and email.
- Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University infrastructure.
- Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
- Must be able to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience with MacOS Operating System, Adobe Creative Cloud programs such as Premiere Pro, Photoshop, Lightroom, After Effects; Audacity Sound Recording Program; Box storage system, or other related programs and software.
- Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment possessing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
