Job Duties
Northern Virginia Mental Health Institute is seeking an Expressive Therapist (Art/Dance/Drama) to support the facility's mission: actively promoting the recovery of individuals with serious mental illness. Knowledge of the principles, techniques and methods of expressive therapy and the recovery process are essential. The successful candidate will provide safe and effective expressive therapy programming in a supportive environment to encourage self-expression, enhance coping skills and foster the self-development of individuals. In addition to providing well-coordinated and diverse expressive therapy programs, responsibilities include completing Psychosocial Rehabilitation assessments, engaging in interdisciplinary treatment team meetings, completing expressive therapy consultative evaluations, and documenting the progress of individuals. Additional duties will include, but are not limited to, participating in special events, departmental and hospital wide initiatives, and utilizing recovery and Therapeutic Options of Virginia techniques with the individuals receiving services at NVMHI.This position is primarily Tuesday to Saturday 8:00am to 4:45pm; however, flexibility to work additional weekend/evening hours and cover some holidays is essential.
Minimum Qualifications• Master's degree in expressive therapy or a master's degree in a related field plus graduate coursework and supervised field experience in expressive therapy required.• Experience evaluating individuals for expressive therapy services, establishing treatment interventions and assessing the effectiveness of those interventions.• For Art Therapists: Provisional Registered Art Therapist (ATR-P) required within six months of employment.• For Dance/Movement Therapists: Registration as a Dance/Movement Therapist (R-DMT) required within six months of employment.• For Drama Therapists: Registration as a Drama Therapist (RDT) required within six months of employment
Additional Considerations• For Art Therapists: Board Certified Art Therapist (ATR-BC) preferred.• For Dance/Movement Therapists: Board Certification as a Dance/Movement Therapist (BC-DMT) preferred.• Experience working with individuals with mental illness in a clinical setting as an expressive therapist or expressive therapy intern preferred.• Previous experience with Trauma Informed Practices strongly preferred
