Assistant Branch Librarian (ABL) - 24 hrs./wk.

Position Overview
Under the general direction of branch management, performs a variety of services to support patron service. Duties vary depending on location and volume.
Responsibilities
- Serve the public by checking in/out materials, managing lost/damaged items, issuing/replacing library cards, registering patrons, and updating patron information.
- Maintain collection: sort, shelve, inspect, clean, and repair materials; manage book drops and shelf reading.
- Ensure circulation policies are followed; handle data entry related to overdue, lost, damaged, and returned items.
- Manage incoming and outgoing library materials, including packing, unpacking, and inspection.
- Generate reports for holds and inter-library loans; communicate with patrons and other libraries as needed.
- Provide reference and information services; assist patrons with searches using ILS, databases, and online tools.
- Assist with access to digital collections and demonstrate eReader devices and applications.
- Guide patrons on library policies; handle inquiries and direct complex requests to Librarians.
- Manage monetary transactions, balance registers, and forward funds to Finance.
- Support patrons and staff with library equipment; perform routine maintenance.
- Perform clerical tasks such as ordering materials, managing supplies, and filing.
- Sort and distribute mail.
- Train and guide less experienced staff; may lead team assignments.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Preferred: experience in a library or retail setting.
- Basic clerical, computer, and phone skills.
- Knowledge of popular culture and library genres.
- Basic math skills.
- Understanding of KDL policies and procedures.
- Ability to work independently and follow policies.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
- Leadership skills for guiding staff.
- Physical ability to lift up to 40 pounds, push/pull carts, and reach above shoulder level.
- Good hearing, manual dexterity, and keyboarding skills.
- Ability to operate library equipment and travel between locations.
Work Environment & Schedule
Normal office environment; may include travel between locations and occasional out-of-county travel. Schedule varies by season, including evenings and weekends.
