Job Description
This is a 12-month librarian track Assistant Professor / Librarian II or Associate Professor / Librarian III position (rank commensurate with prior experience).
MLS Director Duties:
The director of the Library School will:
- Coordinate the activities of the new school, including developing and refining a graduate curriculum that meets American Library Association (ALA) standards.
- Obtain and oversee MLS adjuncts, graduate assistants, and other staff.
- Assist in establishing ALA accreditation candidacy and approval.
- Implement an embedded assessment program and provide recurring MU and ALA reports.
- Collaborate with the team overseeing student advising, internships, and placements.
- Teach two or more MLS courses per semester within their subject area, depending on enrollment and program needs.
- Assist the dean’s office with budgeting, marketing, fundraising, and recruitment.
- Fulfill other activities related to the school’s management and success as needed.
Library faculty positions in West Virginia’s University System are 12-month, non-tenured appointments renewed annually through peer review. This position requires following the University Library Faculty Handbook, participating in faculty governance, university service, and scholarly activities. Traditional library duties in public services, archives, systems, or technical services may also be part of this position based on expertise and need.
Library Faculty Duties:
- Perform routine library duties or lead special projects in one of the university library’s departments.
- Work collaboratively and effectively both as a team member and independently.
- Organize information, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines efficiently.
- Demonstrate proficiency in information literacy and information technology skills.
- Participate actively in campus and university committees, task forces, and professional activities.
Salary Range: Salary is commensurate with qualifications, experience, and internal equity.
Education:
An ALA-accredited master’s degree in Library Science and an earned doctorate in Library Science or a related field (ABD candidates considered).
Experience:
- Research and instruction skills with proficiency in delivering public services technology.
- At least two years of teaching foundational courses in library science at the graduate level in an ALA-accredited program.
- Knowledge of learning management systems (e.g., Blackboard Ultra) for delivering asynchronous and synchronous content.
- Excellent communication skills and a record of professional participation.
Additional Experience:
- Experience with ALA accreditation processes for MLS programs.
- Leadership experience as a program director, chair, or similar role in an ALA-accredited MLS program.
- Knowledge of assessment programming related to MLS curriculum development and accreditation reporting.
