Overview
Performed under the general direction of branch management, exercises professional librarian skills serving as a Branch Librarian. Specific duties will vary based on branch size and area of responsibility.
Responsibilities:
- Provides reference and information services to library patrons, including answering questions regarding collections, library services, and policies.
- Conducts research to obtain sources of information, including inter and intra-library loans.
- Assists patrons in their search for library materials and provides material's advisory and reference interview services.
- Participates in blogging and social media in support of library initiatives.
- Maintains collection, including shifting books, discarding materials, and communicating collection needs.
- Facilitates technical support and tutoring for library staff, volunteers, and patrons.
- Assists in planning and implementing library programs for various communities.
- Initiates and maintains community contacts.
- Pursues professional development through committees, meetings, and conferences.
- Participates in professional organizations and shares information through networking and presentations.
- Performs clerical tasks such as order entry and supply ordering.
- Serves the public by checking in and out library materials and processing registrations.
- Facilitates access to KDL's digital collection and provides demonstrations of eReader devices.
- Responsible for collection maintenance duties and ensuring circulation policies are followed.
- Sorts and inspects library materials received from or delivered to other libraries.
- Provides information regarding circulation policies and procedures.
- May process and record monetary transactions.
- May promote services for the Talking Book and Braille Center.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements:
- Master's degree in Library Science or related field, or a Bachelor's degree with 5 years relevant experience, or a high school diploma with 10 years applicable experience.
- Ability to travel between work locations as needed.
- Working knowledge of public library operations and policies.
- Considerable knowledge of circulating materials and reference sources.
- Advanced knowledge of library computer hardware and software applications.
- Ability to work under general supervision and exercise independent judgment.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
- Analytical ability to maintain accurate statistics.
- Physical ability to retrieve materials and operate equipment.
- Computer skills for effective information access.
- Ability to operate library equipment.
Work Environment:
- Normal office environment with minimal discomfort.
- Occasional travel between KDL locations and out of county for meetings.
- Varied work hours, including evenings and weekends.
- Frequent sitting/standing for extended periods.
