Position Description
Harris County Public Library (HCPL) - Overview
Established in 1921, HCPL has grown from small local libraries to a network of 26 branches, two technology centers, and two partner locations, serving unincorporated Harris County and surrounding communities. HCPL was awarded the 2024 National Medal for Museum and Library Service for innovative community initiatives and is known for fostering a supportive, inclusive work environment.
What You Will Do:
Lead and oversee complex library programs, develop strategic priorities, implement policies, supervise staff, promote excellent customer service, and foster community partnerships. Serve as a liaison with library administration and staff, and develop future services and programs.
Responsibilities include:
- Staff supervision, training, and evaluation
- Setting work standards and motivating staff
- Communicating vision and strategic goals
- Building community partnerships and managing branch operations
- Overseeing collections and responding to community needs
- Managing budgets, preparing reports, and ensuring safety and maintenance
Requirements:
Master’s Degree in Library and Information Studies or related field plus 3 years of relevant experience and 2 years of supervisory experience; or a Bachelor's Degree plus 5 years of experience and 4 years supervisory experience. Must have reliable transportation, document qualifications, and possess knowledge of library principles, management, customer service, and modern technology.
Additional Information:
Position is full-time, based at High Meadows Branch, with salary $32.45/hour. Physical demands include lifting up to 40 pounds, long periods of sitting and standing, and working in an office environment. Must pass a criminal background check and drug screening.
Preferred qualifications: Experience with community engagement, bilingual skills, project management certifications, and working with diverse populations.
Work Environment: Office setting, with travel required for community engagement. Must have dependable transportation and proficiency in Office 365, social media, and digital devices.
