JOB SUMMARY
The Teen Librarian will provide library service and programming to children and young adults and assist patrons in finding materials.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Provide excellent customer service to ensure the highest quality of service as established by the City of Page.
- Provide prompt, courteous and direct assistance to all patrons with basic information regarding use of library materials, equipment, and services.
- Ensure the library's collections include relevant print and digital resources aimed at the specific interests and needs of the community's teens.
- Curate content, including digital resources and special collections, for and with teen patrons, based on teen needs and interests.
- Design, implement, and evaluate specific programs and activities (both in the library and in the community) for young adults based on their needs and interests.
- As opportunities arise, educate the public about the value of public libraries and the profession. Creatively promote library services and the profession.
- Coordinate daily activities of volunteers assigned to teen services.
- Take a leadership role in developing, implementing and evaluating the overall teen services program.
- Develop, maintain, and weed young adult collections, including books, videos, CDs and other special materials.
- Actively promote library services, materials, and programs to patrons.
- Conduct tours and develop informational materials describing services and programs.
- Demonstrate good stewardship of physical and virtual spaces by preparing displays, continually maintaining interactive areas, and producing and updating content for the library’s web presence, as assigned.
- Confer with individuals, teachers, and community groups to assist in developing programs to encourage and improve library usage.
- Stay abreast of current trends in information services through reading professional literature and attending professional conferences.
- Take responsibility for enforcing library policies.
- Assist with the supervision of children and teen services.
- Represent the library to other community agencies serving children.
- Perform public service duties as scheduled, assisting patrons with automated databases and other equipment as needed.
- Assist in the children's department.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
- High School; and
- One (1) year of children recreation experience preferred;
Licenses or Certifications:
- Maintain or obtain First Aid and CPR certification preferred.
Special Requirements:
- None.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to motivate children and maintain a positive atmosphere, and if necessary, use positive disciplinary techniques.
- Skill in data collection and analysis, word processing, and preparation of reports and programs.
- Skill in First Aid and CPR.
- Ability to sort and file alphabetically and numerically.
- Ability to follow simple oral directions.
- Ability to interact with others.
- Ability to follow standard office environment safety requirements.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee must exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. The following physical abilities are required: climbing, fingering, handling, hearing, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, talking, and visual acuity.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work requires decision making that could lead to major community or organizational consequences if this position fails to make the appropriate decision at the time.
