CommonWealth Beacon is a nonprofit, nonpartisan source of in-depth news, analysis, and original reporting on policy, politics, and civic life in Massachusetts. Our mission is to support a more inclusive and vibrant civic culture—one where government is more responsive, transparent, and effective—by delivering rigorous journalism on the issues that matter most to people across Massachusetts.
We are proud to partner with Report for America (RFA) to offer a unique opportunity for a talented reporter to help bring critical local stories to light. Through this national service program, journalists are placed in newsrooms across the country to strengthen coverage of underreported issues and communities.
Job Responsibilities
This position entails covering how major policy issues – including housing, economic development, education, and transportation – affect residents in Massachusetts’ Gateway Cities, former industrial centers that are home to many of the state’s immigrants. The reporter writes daily pieces as well as long-form articles about the challenges these cities face in their efforts to promote economic mobility among residents and restore vitality to their local economy, focusing on the experiences of local residents.
Service term: July 7, 2025 – July 6, 2026
Qualifications
- Strong reporting and writing skills, including a demonstrated ability to write complex, long-form articles exploring an issue.
- Ability to go beyond official statements to find inside sources and break news.
- Capacity to juggle multiple stories at a time.
- Knowledge of content management systems and email platforms a plus.
Benefits & Compensation
Salary range for this role is $65,000 – $75,000.
Health insurance is provided by Harvard Pilgrim Health Care HMO Flex 2500 and is fully covered for full-time employees.
We offer unlimited paid time off which must be approved by the employee’s direct supervisor.
Our offices are closed for 13 paid holidays in 2025: Patriots’ Day (April 21); Memorial Day (May 26); Juneteenth (June 19); Independence Day (July 4); Labor Day (September 1); Indigenous Peoples Day (October 13); Veterans Day (November 11); Thanksgiving (November 27-28); and Christmas (December 25).
This position will be hybrid (some days in the office per week).
Moving stipends are not a current policy for our organization; however, we would be open to considering this with an interested applicant.
