Job Purpose
The Associate Editor plays a critical role in upholding the legacy and advancing the mission of The Journal of Negro Education at Howard University. By ensuring the timely publication of high-quality scholarship on Black education, this position contributes to informed discourse, policy development, and positive change in the field. The Associate Editor is essential for maintaining the journal's reputation for excellence, expanding its reach and impact, and ultimately contributing to the broader goal of educational equity and empowerment for Black communities.
Supervisory Authority
The Associate Editor will have direct supervisory authority over the Administrative Assistant and the Graduate Assistant, including responsibility for assigning tasks, providing performance feedback, and conducting performance reviews. The Associate Editor will also play a role in the hiring and onboarding process for these positions.
Nature And Scope
The Associate Editor of The Journal of Negro Education serves as a key steward of the journal's mission, ensuring the rigorous review, timely publication, and broad dissemination of high-quality research on Black education. This role combines traditional editorial functions with a focus on technological innovation and community engagement, reflecting the evolving landscape of academic publishing.
In essence, the Associate Editor plays a multifaceted role that blends scholarly rigor, technological savvy, and community engagement to further the journal's impact and reach. This position demands a combination of intellectual curiosity, meticulous attention to detail, and a dedication to fostering meaningful dialogue and change in the realm of Black education.
Principal Accountabilities
Editorial Oversight: The Associate Editor works closely with the Editor-in-Chief to manage the full editorial lifecycle, from manuscript submission and peer review to copyediting, proofreading, and final publication.Technological Integration: The Associate Editor embraces emerging technologies, including AI-powered tools, to enhance editorial efficiency, accuracy, and reach. This includes exploring applications for manuscript screening, plagiarism detection, trend analysis, and improved content categorization.Community Engagement: The Associate Editor actively engages with the academic community, fostering relationships with scholars, researchers, and practitioners to attract high-quality submissions and promote the journal's visibility.Leadership and Mentorship: The Associate Editor provides direct supervision and mentorship to the Administrative Assistant and Graduate Assistant, ensuring their effective contribution to the journal's operations.Mission-Driven Focus: The Associate Editor demonstrates a deep commitment to the mission of The Journal of Negro Education and a passion for advancing scholarship and understanding in the field of Black education.Core Competencies

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor’s degree (master’s degree preferred) in Education, African American Studies, or a related field.Strong preference for candidates with a demonstrated focus on Black education in their academic work.Experience
3-5 years of relevant experience in academic publishing, scholarly editing, or a related field.Proven ability to manage complex editorial workflows, including peer review processes.Experience working with digital publishing platforms and content management systems.Skills & Abilities
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with meticulous attention to detail and accuracy.Proficiency in copyediting and proofreading, adhering to APA 7th edition style guidelines.Demonstrated understanding of issues in Black education and a commitment to the journal's mission.Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, and relevant academic databases.Familiarity with XML, HTML, and digital publishing processes.Willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies, including AI-powered tools.Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.Additional Considerations
Experience with online manuscript management systems (e.g., ScholarOne) is highly desirable.Familiarity with data analysis and reporting tools is a plus.Prior experience supervising or mentoring staff is preferred.Compliance Salary Range Disclosure
