Job Description
About the Role
Wirecutter is searching for a thoughtful, collaborative, and experienced supervising editor to help manage kitchen product coverage, and serve as the people manager for several staff writers on the kitchen team.
As a supervising editor, you will work with the kitchen team’s senior editor to plan beat coverage; propose new ideas for guides, short form content, videos, newsletters and more; and edit guides and short-form articles. You will report to the Senior Editor, Kitchen, Wirecutter. You will be based in Wirecutter’s office in Long Island City, New York.

Responsibilities:
- Work with the senior editor to set the strategy for the kitchen beat, and assign projects to staff writers and freelancers.
- Project-manage multiple long form guides and short form content with writers; help to set priorities and deadlines; suggest and implement creative reporting strategies; and edit and revise copy.
- People-manage several staff writers, approving timecards and expense reports and doing mid-year and annual reviews.
- Thoughtfully support writers’ career development; collaborate with and coach writers rather than overwriting their work.
- Oversee hiring and onboarding of freelance support staff as needed.
- Collaborate with the audience team on bringing more attention to our content; with our photo and art teams on compelling and informative visuals; and with our operations team on product ordering and testing logistics.
- Uphold our values of journalistic independence and our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
Basic Qualifications:
- 5+ years of experience working at a media company with at least two years of experience managing writers.
- 3+ years of project and process management experience, including planning and working in an editorial environment.
- 5+ years experience using kitchen gear and food products.
- 5+ years experience cooking with a rigorous approach to food and food prep.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience writing or editing reviews of products or services.
- Experience creating test plans for evaluating products.
- Experience in a test or professional kitchen.
- Experience collaborating with an art director and/or photo director to present content visually.
- Experience expressing complex ideas using visualizations such as charts, graphs, or infographics.
- Ability to discern what’s essential and what’s unnecessary in coverage area, and show passion for the topic balanced by skepticism of marketing and unproven claims.
The annual base pay range for this role is between $92,700.00 and $109,000.00.
