Senior Writer & Speechwriter to the CEO

POSITION SUMMARY - This position is based in Arlington, VA
Reporting to the Senior Director of CEO Communications, the Senior Writer & Speechwriter will play a key role in elevating the voice of Conservation International’s CEO. This role focuses on crafting compelling speeches, remarks, letters, and communications that articulate the CEO’s vision and amplify Conservation International’s mission to high-level audiences.
The ideal candidate has exceptional writing skills, a strategic mindset, and the ability to distill complex topics related to science, business, and international development into clear, inspiring narratives. This role will require close collaboration with the CEO, senior leadership, and the communications team to ensure all messaging aligns with institutional goals and reflects the CEO’s unique voice.

RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop speeches, remarks, letters, and talking points for the CEO’s high-profile events, board meetings, and public appearances, ensuring all communications reflect the CEO’s voice and Conservation International’s mission.
- Draft key institutional materials, including sections of the annual report, op-eds, and media statements, tailored for high-level audiences.
- Work closely with the Senior Director of CEO Communications to shape messaging strategy and align CEO communications with broader organizational priorities.
- Collaborate with internal teams to identify and synthesize key messages, ensuring that all content is clear, compelling, and impactful.
- Provide real-time support for the CEO at public speaking engagements, including staffing as needed.
- Contribute to innovative storytelling initiatives to elevate the CEO’s role as a global leader in conservation.
- Edit and refine communications from the CEO to maintain consistency, professionalism, and credibility.
Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Typical office environment.
- Frequent collaboration with senior staff and executives.
- Some international travel may be required to support the CEO at events and engagements.
- This position follows a hybrid work structure, working some days from the office and some remotely. Guidance will be shared during the interview process.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field and 7+ years of professional experience in writing and editing for executives, mainstream media, government, NGOs, or scientific institutions—or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Proven experience in executive-level speechwriting and event support.
- Demonstrated ability to translate technical, scientific, or policy-related material into engaging, accessible narratives for informed public audiences.
- Strong strategic thinking, research, and writing skills, with an ability to meet tight deadlines.
- Exceptional collaboration skills and the ability to work effectively with senior leaders and cross-functional teams.
- Willingness and ability to travel as needed to support the CEO’s engagements.
