Description
is looking to fill a Senior Materials Handling Specialist position in the Technical Services/Handling unit. In 2023, Technical Services/Handling staff unpacked 456 pallets of new materials, received 439,688 books and audiovisual materials in Horizon, the library's Integrated Library System (ILS), and processed 370,174 new items for addition to the library's collection.
Location and hours:
This position is located at Ridgedale Library at 12601 Ridgedale Drive, Minnetonka, MN 55305, adjacent to the Library Administration Office on the ground floor. Department core hours are Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Shifts are 8 hours and have some flexibility within core hours.
About the position type:
This is a full-time, benefit earning position. You must be a current of the Hennepin County Library to apply for this position. Limited duration employees not eligible.

In this position, you will:
- Receive orders of print and audio-visual materials:
- Scan barcoded books and audio-visual materials into Horizon receiving system.
- Complete Express and QuickTime orders that require quick turn-around.
- Sort all materials by type onto book trucks for cataloging.
- Process new material, both audiovisual and print, to make available for circulation:
- Includes repackaging or reprocessing audiovisual material.
- Print and apply labels.
- Induct new materials.
- Work the Automated Materials Handler (AMH) distribution and induction points as assigned; the handling AMH checks-in and sort materials for all 41 branch libraries in the HCL system.
- Collaborate with Handling staff members to prepare and ship print materials to the Adult Correctional Facility (ACF) for processing
- Serve as Team Lead for the department; create daily schedule, assist supervisor with managing workflow, and provide direction to staff as needed.
- Perform higher level department specific duties such as:
- Assist with managing CM and Book Club Kit Collections.
- Screen and Process NOF Materials.
- Add NOF materials back into the collection.
- Send out Label Replacements.
- Receive and route friends and projects orders.
- Help support and manage department PSWP workers
- Perform special project activities and serve on groups/teams.
Need to have:
- One of the following:
- Two years or more of office clerical experience.
- 18 months or more of office clerical experience and completion of the Office Specialist
- One year of office clerical experience and completion of the Human Services
- An approved combination of post high school education and office clerical experience to equal at least two years.
Physical ability to push book carts requiring 20 pounds of push force, bend, lift and stack materials, stoop, reach above head, stand for long periods of time, and occasionally lift boxes weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Experience:
- Working with Microsoft Office applications (Excel and Word), email, keyboarding, data entry, and use of the Internet and Intranet.
- Working with Automated Materials Handler.
- Working within the Acquisitions module of the Horizon Integrated Library System (ILS).
- Ability to:
- Interact effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
- Respond positively to changes in workload and assignments.
- Work independently with minimal direction.
- Handle and prioritize multiple tasks simultaneously while meeting deadlines.
- Interact with managers, co-workers, and volunteers with tact and discretion and communicate effectively with internal and external customers.
