Description
JOB SUMMARYThe Library Assistant performs basic Library support functions and routine circulation desk duties. Responsibilities include working at the circulation desk; renewing Library cards; processing material in and out of area; performing shelving duties; processing fines; and providing customer service to patrons.Examples of Duties
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS• Performs routine Library maintenance activities, which may include cleaning and repairing Library materials; cleaning and dusting computer areas and shelves; replenishing materials in machines; monitoring inventory; procuring replenishment items; pulling old materials for recycling; labeling shelves; hunting for lost or misplaced items; repairing books or making notes of damaged items within books; and performing other related activities.• Provides customer service to patrons, including: responding to questions; explaining Library policies and procedures; giving directions; collects payments for fines and fees; and performing other related activities.• Performs a variety of support duties which may include: repairing library books for re-entry into the circulation system; opening and closing Library facilities; and/or other related duties.• Assists with training new staff members.• Performs other related duties of a similar nature or level.
PHYSICAL DEMANDSThe work is light work. The employee is frequently required to apply 10 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. The employee is occasionally required to exert up to 20 pounds of force to move objects, In addition, positions in this classification typically require crawling, feeling, grasping, handling, perceiving sounds at normal speaking levels, discriminating among sounds, lifting, manual dexterity, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, expressing ideas by the spoken word, visual acuity to analyze data/determine accuracy or observe facilities/operate motor vehicles or equipment, and walking.
WORKING CONDITIONSWork is performed in a dynamic environment that requires sensitivity to change and responsiveness to changing goals, priorities, and needs. Schedule includes evening and weekend hours.Typical Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONSEducation and Experience:
Requires a high school diploma or equivalent Two (2) years of library and customer service-related work experience
Supplemental Information
All applicants tentatively selected for a position with Beaufort County Council will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for the illegal use of drugs and to a background check prior to appointment. Employment is contingent upon clearing both the drug screening and background investigation.
