Overview
The Northwest Georgia Regional Library System is located in Whitfield, Murray and Gordon counties in Northwest Georgia serving a population of approximately 206,000. The regional office is located in the Dalton/Whitfield Library, Cappes Street, Dalton GA.
For this salaried, full-time position, the salary will be commensurate with experience with a range of $85,000 to $105,000 plus benefits. Benefits include State Health Insurance benefits, additional selected benefits, Annual and Sick Leave, and participation in the Teacher’s Retirement System of Georgia.
The Regional Library Director, under the leadership and direction of the Regional Library Board of Trustees, is responsible for planning, organizing and administering the various operations of the Library System.
This area is in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains with beautiful scenery and excellent outdoor activities. The diverse population provides a great opportunity for increasing literacy.
Job Functions
- Administers the policies as adopted by the Regional Library Board of Trustees, and is a liaison between staff and Boards, recommending needed policy, program or services changes. Attends all board meetings.
- Reports to the Regional Board consistently about programs, personnel and operations and stays abreast of the needs of the staff to encourage good morale and work conditions.
- Evaluates existing library services, staying informed about the needs of the various communities, and develops long and short-term plans for improving services.
- Continually engages with Funding agencies for development of an appropriate budget for needed services for the libraries. Identifies and seeks grant funding to benefit expanding collections, programs and services.
- Guides the annual proposed budget, controls costs and cash flow, authorizing purchases within budget parameters. Evaluates the work functions in the system organization to encourage efficiencies in labor, materials, equipment, and the facilities themselves.
- Oversees the selection, hiring and training of employees according to policies, preparing job descriptions and salary scales for Board approval. Cooperates with staff to continually increase service and materials levels.
- Stays abreast of the collections of library materials, their selection, and maintenance, and continually tries to improve the quality of each library’s collection.
- Works with regional Media to advertise library services, programs and special activities.
Job Minimum Qualifications
- A Grade 5 (b) Librarian’s Professional Graduate Certificate as defined by the State Board for Certification of Librarians, a Master’s Degree in Library Science (MLIS) from an ALA accredited institution.
- Must have extensive work experience at the administrative level, understanding the organization, legal structure, operation, budgeting, and personnel management of the Library System and the other funding agencies.
- Must continually maintain a high level of productivity, good morale, professional judgment, and the encouragement of staff.
- Must have good skills in working with the constituencies to provide the very best quality library programs and services and maintain a good public rapport with the communities.
- Must have excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to be succinct and clear.
