The Cook County Department of Transportation and Highways is seeking a Public Relations Specialist to oversee internal and external communications. This includes managing information dissemination to the public, other County Bureaus/Departments, and media outlets regarding Bureau/Department matters.

Location:
In the Loop District, downtown Chicago, near cultural sites, parks, and public transportation, with access to amenities and transportation options.
Role Summary:
The Public Relations Specialist will manage communication efforts, draft press materials, develop press conferences, and serve as a spokesperson when necessary. Collaboration with various departments and advising leadership on communication strategies are key responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities and Duties:
- Represent the Bureau/Department before the media and coordinate media access.
- Respond to media and public inquiries, and develop communication strategies.
- Draft press releases, remarks, and internal/external communications.
- Collaborate with departments and legal counsel on communication matters.
- Lead communication programs and train staff on communication protocols.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Clear and concise communication skills
- Experience managing press briefings and media relations
- Knowledge of public relations and media
- Ability to understand government operations and policies
- Skilled in speechwriting and public presentation
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Ability to handle sensitive PR matters
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution
- Two years of experience in communications or public relations, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Physical Requirements:
Sedentary work involving minimal physical exertion, primarily sitting, with occasional walking or standing.
Employment Terms:
This position is exempt from the County's career service rules, at-will, and may consider political factors. Residency within Cook County must be established within six months if not already a resident.
