Senior Advisor, Chemical Hazard and SDS Author, Product Stewardship - CO
This position is required to be on-site at our Calgary, Alberta, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada or Loveland, Colorado, United States corporate offices.

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Product Risk and Stewardship, the Senior Advisor, Chemical Hazard and SDS Author, Product Stewardship acts as an expert (the lead) for Nutrien’s Chemical Hazard classification and safety data sheet generation function with the responsibility to improve hazard classification consistency across the company.
What you will do:
- Lead the chemical classification and SDS authoring function to defined standards:
- Define procedural standards to meet GHS requirements with Stewardship management and implement across the function.
- Set/coordinate SDS request work priorities with team members.
- Conduct chemical hazard classifications and author Safety Data Sheets:
- Work with stakeholders to communicate, acquire and interpret product identity, formulation, internal/external test results and fit for use information required.
- Conduct hazard classification assessments of new and modified chemical products (primarily fertilizers, industrial chemicals, specialty chemicals, feed ingredients, chemical solutions), in use chemicals and process intermediates.
- Develop Safety Data Sheets for product formulations and oversee the creation of Nutrien Wholesale in-use chemical and process intermediate “Right-to-Know” safety documents.
- Technical team lead for integration, renewal and maintenance of SDS authoring software:
- Oversee authoring software operational effectiveness and efficiency, template configuration and field output standards and correctness as well as problem solving.
- Schedule and coordinate software and regulatory data package version upgrades between software vendor and internal IT services.
- Research authoring software advancements, make replacement or enhancement recommendations for projects to improve authoring efficiency and effectiveness.
- Work with IT services and third-party provider to schedule and implement version upgrades and review upgrade functionality and logic correctness.
- A key technical contact with third party provider to address software functionality issues and limitations, petition for enhancements, changes, additions.
- Stakeholder Communications:
- Advise stakeholder departments and requesters on product liability issues, classification change impact and options, ingredient disclosures and other matters.
- Interpret component chemical reactivity to determine final product substances, interpret product test data, toxicology reports, environmental and research studies to build weight of evidence case for hazards.
- Work with Stewardship leadership to develop decision summaries to effect necessary classification revisions.
- Assess and communicate regulation change impacts (GHS, REACH, TSCA) on product chemical hazard classifications.
What you will bring:
- A formal degree or diploma in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Sciences or related discipline.
- A minimum 5 years experience in chemical hazard classification, safety data sheet development and product risk assessment using SDS authoring software.
- Expert level understanding and application knowledge of chemical equations, reactivity and compatibility, data interpretation and GHS for chemical hazard classifications.
- Demonstrated ability to build consensus and effect team decision making.
- Well organized in own work, with ability to impact organizational effectiveness in others and communicate effectively with technical and non-technical contacts.
- Must be self-initiating and demonstrate leadership in identifying and tackling work problems.
- Excellent knowledge of Microsoft products, primarily email, Excel, and Word.
- Training and experience in one or more of Industrial Hygiene, Toxicology, Occupational Health & Safety preferred but not required.
- Ten to fifteen years experience in chemical hazard classification, safety data sheet development and product risk assessment preferred but not required.
- Adept at using industry-standard Safety Data Sheet authoring software platforms preferred but not required.
Salary Range $95,700 - $177,800/annually. This range is estimated for Senior Advisor, Chemical Hazard and SDS Author, Product Stewardship - CO in Loveland, Colorado. Actual salary and benefits may differ based upon location.
