Job Duties
Position provides supervision and monitoring of probationers from Courts and the Parole Board in accordance with DOC standards; to enhance public safety through supervision, follow-up, and the use of community resources, and commitment or re-commitment if necessary.
Contributes to the public safety mission by providing administrative oversight for officer case supervision and report writing to ensure compliance with Department of Corrections (DOC) and district policies. Enhances public safety through the use of Evidence-Based Practices in the training and supervision of staff, with a focus on the encouragement of better outcomes for probationers and parolees. Provides day-to-day supervision and training of District staff under the direction of the Chief Probation Officer. Acts as unit manager in the absence of Chief Probation Officer.
Minimum Qualifications
Working knowledge of federal, state, and local laws governing Probation and Parole. Working knowledge of Virginia Department of Corrections Community Corrections practices, policies, and procedures. Knowledge of the criminal justice system and effective treatment modalities. Demonstrated ability to understand, interpret and communicate the policies, procedures, and standards of the Department of Corrections. Competency in the use of Evidence-Based Practices, to direct the resources of the district toward interventions that produce positive, measurable outcomes. Demonstrated ability to model strong leadership skills, to act at all times as a positive force for pro-social change and to motivate staff to achieve their best work. Use of case review skills to improve officer performance. Demonstrated ability to train new officers to attain competencies required to carry out the work at a high level.
Additional Considerations
Work experience within Community Corrections. Advanced knowledge in criminal justice, a related human services field, or equivalent applicable experience or training. Working experience supervising professional and support staff.
