Communications Manager
at
American Himalayan Foundation .About the FoundationThe American Himalayan Foundation (AHF) was founded in 1981 by a small group of climbers who went to Nepal and Tibet for the mountains but who returned over and over for the people. AHF’s first partners were Sir Edmund Hillary and His Holiness the Dalai Lama, working with the Sherpas and Tibetan refugees. That continues, but our reach has expanded to touch the lives of many thousands of people in need throughout the Himalaya every year.AHF works in partnership with visionary local individuals and organizations, balancing innovation and tradition to bring shelter, education, health, and opportunity to people who have no one else – whether girls at risk of being trafficked, children with disabilities, or Tibetans struggling to survive and maintain their culture. With a headquarters in San Francisco and a Kathmandu regional office, and our motto: “Do good, be kind, have fun,” we get a lot done. For more information about the American Himalayan Foundation, please visit www.himalayan-foundation.org.The OpportunityStorytelling is key to bridging the distance between our supporters and people who live halfway around the world. So, AHF needs a Communications Manager who is passionate about shaping words and images into messages that can both inform and inspire. As the one who produces AHF’s content, you uplift the voices of our partners and beneficiaries while maintaining a clear, compelling, and consistent organizational voice. As Communications Manager, you will spend a lot of your time writing persuasive copy: donor reports and thank you letters, appeals, newsletters, blog posts, social media posts, and other digital and print materials. You will coordinate content across platforms and mediums, on brand and with an eye to furthering AHF’s overall purpose and goals. The breadth of the Foundation’s issue areas – education, counter-trafficking, health, cultural preservation, and others – allows for a great deal of creativity and narrative variety. You will be responsible for developing the calendar and timelines for communications and stewarding each piece through completion. You will also maintain AHF’s digital assets, including the website, email, social media, and extensive photo database.Ideal CandidateIf you like to write and are good at it, this job is for you! AHF seeks a Communications Manager who understands the nuances suited for each subject, medium, and audience and is equally delighted to write an eye-catching headline, a long-form story, or a social media blurb. The AHF brand voice is strong and well-established, so you are skilled at producing pieces that maintain a consistent organizational voice. Related, you embrace opportunities to give, receive, and apply constructive criticism gracefully. You bring an astute visual sense and appreciation for aesthetics – highly valued at AHF – along with a sense of humor and a little whimsy. You have a well-honed ability to independently manage timelines and production of multiple pieces at once – not only for yourself, but in collaboration with colleagues. Similarly, you have a strong orientation toward technology, navigating new systems, and finding solutions.Although you may not have expertise about the people, cultures, and challenges in this part of the world, your intellectual curiosity allows you to quickly become knowledgeable and conversant about AHF’s work and to be energized by the organization’s mission. You’re the right fit for AHF’s next Communications Manager if you are a team player who enjoys working with others and thinks it’s fun to pitch in when needed. We have found that inspiration and fit are key for success on our team: our work resonates with you, as does the way we work.QualificationsExceptional writing and editing skills and a well-tuned visual sense are core to this position. Candidates should have a minimum of three years of professional experience demonstrating a commitment to timely and high-quality production. Writing experience should have a strong marketing orientation and include a variety of forms that all maintain rigorous attention to brand voice. Candidates will need to be organized, good at taking initiative, and able to work collaboratively as well as independently. This is a full-time salaried position based in the San Francisco office.
