Job Description
Conducts education, presentations, and outreach to improve health literacy and disseminate information on programs and services provided to the community. This position educates community members public health issues that currently affect the Laredo community and neighboring areas via centralized (schools, community centers) and decentralized settings (malls, grocery, retail), assists with interviews of clients and community members to gather and provide information to improve communication channels and outreach efforts.Essential Functions/ Job Competencies/ Physical Requirements
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.
Recruits, involves, and utilizes all local mass media contacts and personnel to promote goals of the department; ensures that all local media contacts are aware of the services offered through the Health Department; builds and maintains effective working relationships with the media and assists other department staff in this matter.Prepares preliminary drafts of a weekly health column article or other media release to educate the public and promote program services and activities; prepares radio and television health promotion materials regularly; ensures the accuracy and completeness of the same.Plans, promotes and schedules meetings with civic organizations, church groups, and local governments in order to promote their participation in promoting program services and activities a favorable social environment.Maintains a high level of public relations with the press.Plans and coordinates special program activities such as conferences, publication of brochures, and media campaigns as scheduled activities arise; maintains a current awareness of events and topic of interest.Ensures that promotional and informative materials are developed and assembled in an accurate and timely manner such as pictures, brochures, posters, flyers, announcements, etc.Provides assistance in the collection and interpretation of demographic trend data to be used for program and/or health promotion planning and implementation.Provides health information and advice to community study groups, assist in the interpretation of program services and activities.Assists in the elaboration of all health education materials, brochures, videos, visual aids, or special project reports for the program.Assists in the pre-testing and evaluation of health education materials to be distributed by the program.Works closely with supervisor and public information specialists in the development of selection of materials as required by the program.Provides technical assistance in the preparation and execution of community organizational plans and procedures used by the program.Provides technical assistance in the planning, execution and evaluation of in-service training programs.Assists the Community Health Administrator, Division Manager, Supervisor, and staff in promoting, coordinating and accomplishing all program promotion objectives.Performs work on special written and promotional projects as assigned.Will be required to drive a vehicle for City business.Performs other duties as assigned.COMPETENCIES FOR SUCCESSFUL PERFORMANCE OF JOB DUTIES

Required Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree from an accredited* college or university in Public Health, Education, Sociology, Behavioral Science, Journalism, Government, or a related field.
At least one (1) year of experience in communication, public relations, health promotions, or health related experience or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
*Council of Higher Education Accreditation (C.H.E.A.)
Proof of TB Test/Screening will be required to be presented prior to employment.

Valid Texas Driver License. If applicant holds an out-of-state license, a State of Texas Driver License must be obtained within 6 months of employment.
