Job Description
The Washington Post is seeking an ambitious and experienced reporter to deliver agenda-setting news about the Pentagon and insightful coverage of the highest levels of military decision-making.
The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of reporting scoops and enterprise from within the Office of the Secretary of Defense, combatant commands, and related agencies. A strong source network is essential, along with the ability to navigate the bureaucracy of the E Ring, travel as needed, and simplify complex military topics for a broad audience. Experience with U.S. involvement in conflicts like Afghanistan, Iraq, or Ukraine is a plus.
This role requires quick, accurate reporting to break news, along with the ability to produce in-depth enterprise and feature stories in a lively style. The candidate should demonstrate accountability journalism, collaboration, and enthusiasm for teamwork.
Responsibilities:
- Break news and craft analytical stories about the Pentagon and military affairs, including global conflicts, personnel issues, and relationships with the White House.
- Produce enterprise and investigative stories based on original reporting and sources.
- Create engaging, innovative stories that combine scoops, fast news, and deep analysis.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Minimum of five years’ reporting experience.
- At least three years covering Washington policymakers, including the Pentagon.
- Extensive source network and knowledge of military and foreign policy issues.
- History of high-profile scoops and investigations.
- Ability to cover breaking news with speed and accuracy.
- Commitment to fair, ethical journalism.
