GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF CLASS
Help the Lakeland Public Library with events and promotions. Perform entry level professional duties of moderate difficulty providing the opportunity for professional training in various offices throughout the City. Perform assigned duties to acquire knowledge of methods, procedures and standards required for successful performance. Work is performed under direct supervision.
This internship is with the Lakeland Public Library - Larry R. Jackson Branch located at 1700 N. Florida Ave in Lakeland, FL. Interns will work a maximum of 29 hours a week. The time period for the internship is late May to early August.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Assist children's librarian with programs and events for children and families in a public-facing capacity
- Prepare crafts and activities for children
- Shelve and straighten materials in children's area of library
- Learn and practice techniques for instructing and working with diverse audiences
- Photograph events for library social media
- Assist participants during classes or programs
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Perform related work as required
QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE)
Enrollment as a Junior or Senior in a degree seeking program in an accredited college or university Marketing, Journalism, Communications, Education, Public
Relations, or a related field.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES
- Must be a people-person
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Experience with Canva and graphic editing software preferred
- Must have a flexible schedule and be available to work evenings/weekends for some events.
- Experience and comfort working with audiences of various ages (child, teen, adult)
- Exceptional customer service skills
- Organized and detail-oriented
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective relationships with supervisor, co- workers, other City employees and the general public.
- Skill in communicating effectively both verbally and in writing, and to request clarification when needed.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT/CONDITIONS:
- Requires sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time, exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a recurring basis, routine keyboard operations
- The job risks exposure to no significant environmental hazards
- The job requires normal visual acuity, and field of vision, hearing and speaking
