Summary of Position
Newsday’s FeedMe team has an opening for a food and restaurant reporter to add to our coverage of Long Island's dining scene across digital, print and social platforms. We need a savvy, curious candidate who specializes in multi-platform storytelling – covering restaurant openings/closings and tracking Long Island restaurant trends – be that in quick turnaround features or engaging readers on Instagram and video storytelling. This individual will contribute food-related stories, social and video content for daily coverage and seasonal products, including our quarterly FeedMe magazine.
Essential Duties & Functions
- Scout Nassau and Suffolk counties for restaurant news and trends, interviewing owners and patrons for short stories and social media content. Coverage entails a range of dining settings, from fast-casual chains to roadside delis and taquerias.
- Collaborate with the Restaurants team to update standing seasonal dining guides, from summer’s best lobster rolls to winter’s restaurants with fireplaces.
- Maintaining listings for destination-specific dining, from Garden City to Greenport.
Essential Job Knowledge & Skills
- A minimum of 3+ years’ experience required. Reporting and writing experience focused on restaurants and food trends is a plus.
- A bachelor’s degree a plus, not required.
- Ability to work a flexible and varied schedule – some night and weekend assignments are required.
- A valid driver’s license and car, with the ability to drive to assigned locations throughout Long Island.
- Proficiency in shooting iPhone photos and video for editorial use.
- Comfortable making appearances on video and social platforms.
- Strong organization and time management skills, including the ability to prioritize and multi-task while working on multiple assignments.
- Work well as a member of a team.
- Spanish-speaking skills are a plus.
- Must not have any food restrictions.
Compensation
- The hourly base rate range for this role is $32.53 - $53.38, commensurate with experience.
- This position is represented by the Graphics Communication Conference, PPPWU.
Physical Requirements
- Employees are generally required to work in the office and/or out in the field a minimum of three (3) days per week.
- Ability to travel throughout Long Island as related to the assignment being covered.
- A driver’s license in good standing and reliable means of transportation are required.
