Overview
This editor is responsible for overseeing coverage of the key topics of health and transportation. Transportation coverage, which includes roads, aviation and rails, requires knowledge, initiative, creativity, strong editing and judgment, and the ability to mentor and provide guidance and set goals for a staff of reporters. Preferred, but not required, is a familiarity with the Long Island Rail Road, as well as with highway and rail projects. The editor must have the ability to collaborate with colleagues across print, digital and video platforms. Our health coverage will cover topics including health and wellness, understanding the latest medical research and health and fitness. The editor will help experiment with new and engaging approaches to this content.
This editor will encourage reporters to cultivate sources and drive coverage that makes Newsday essential reading for Long Islanders, particularly with an eye to storytelling from the commuters’ perspective.
This team should focus on breaking news, watchdog reporting and enterprise, but also will experiment with products and approaches that reaches commuters and the health conscious when/where/with what information we can best provide to help them meet their needs. This editor must be capable of assessing reader/subscriber trends and acting on the resulting metrics to lead coverage that serves our loyal subscribers and helps Newsday build subscribers and new, diverse audiences and, at the same time, encourage reporters to cultivate diverse sources. The editor also ensures that reporters continue to grow Newsday’s strong social media presence on health ands transportation topics and are contributing video/photo content as part of their reporting. This coverage will be an important topic to build Newsday Live events around and experimentation on ways to connect with subscribers, from real-time commuter alerts to ways to live a healthier life.
