Department of Theatre, Drama, and Contemporary Dance

is comprised of passionate practitioners of theatre and contemporary dance. We examine the place of these arts in society, bringing both classic and original creations to stage. We present our work locally, nationally, and in other parts of the world. Our shows bring audiences to their feet, allowing them to experience the expressive power and emotion of performance.

We produce plays, dances, musical theatre, original productions, works of scholarship, and publications. Our department explores all facets of professional performance, including technical production and scenic design. We are playwrights, choreographers, actors, dancers, technicians, designers, and scholars, taught by leading professionals in contemporary dance and the theatrical arts.

Job Summary

The Properties and Scenic Artist Supervisor role supervises and manages MFA candidates and undergraduate employees in the implementation of stage properties and stage scenic painting for all department productions, including the summer season.

Department-Specific ResponsibilitiesOversees and manages all aspects of the scenic arts and props processes. Graduate students serve in the roles of scenic charge artists and prop managers on all productions.Manages and is responsible for the paint and props departmental budget in consultation with the scenic studio supervisor.Provides patient and encouraging direction/guidance to student scenic charge artists, prop managers, painters, and prop artisans of varying levels of experience and knowledge.Cultivate a healthy and welcoming studio environment.Directs all other paints and props personnel in the execution of scenic art and properties plans.Monitor the quality, execution, and safety of all paint and prop elements during production builds. OSHA and workplace safety standards is expected.Organization, maintenance, and upkeep of the paint and prop area tools, materials, storage, and off-site inventories.Determines, approves, and procures all paint and props raw materials and supplies.General ResponsibilitiesConsults with and advises in-house and guest scenic designers, set designers, department heads, production staff and the administration regarding set design plans and the development of artistic concepts, scenic art lighting, production plans, and timetables.Conceptualizes and creates scenic art to support and enhance the set design.Manages, plans, and oversees all aspects of the paint and props department.Performs all artistic finish painting beyond the scope and talent of subordinate personnel.Manages all aspects of the departmental budget and administrative needs. Prepares monthly and yearly departmental budget, analyzes needs, seeks new ways to improve efficiency, reviews trends, forecasts departmental budget for future shows.Determines, approves, and procures all paint and props and scenic raw materials and supplies. Directs all other paints and props personnel in the execution of scenic art plans.Supervises hourly and temporary staff. Provides process improvement suggestions and implementation when necessary.

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to remain in a stationary position as well as the ability to move about the workplace for long durations. It requires effective communication, the ability to operate machinery, tools, and controls. The role requires the ability to ascend/descend ladders/stairs, and to position one's self in low level positions, detect a variety of chemicals and/or gases. The role requires the ability to ascend to rooftops and move in tight spaces to perform and complete inspections. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
