About the Job

About The Job:The Communications Coordinator is responsible for designing, creating, and implementing a comprehensive, dynamic, and nimble communications plan, using a variety of tools and ensuring consistent and effective messaging and branding. Additionally, this position will be responsible for working with faculty, staff, and student researchers in developing presentations, presentation templates, figures for proposals and research papers.

The Communications Coordinator ensures that all communication tools are designed to engage their targeted stakeholders; enhance and promote the reputation of the department; provide accurate and interesting information about the department and how its students, postdoctoral associates, faculty, and staff members are engaged in education, research, and outreach; and garner support from and recruit prospective students, faculty, and donors.

Responsibilities:Original Content Creation and Management (50%)-Design and execute strategic marketing and communications initiatives involving print, website, and social media to promote departmental programs, recruitment, and research to both internal and external stakeholders-Create information/promotion flyers and brochures for the department that are used for the recruitment of students and faculty, and for special events.-Produce monthly internal newsletter to faculty and staff with timely updates on news, awards, accomplishments, and upcoming events-Composing communications on behalf of departmental leadership-Collaborate with the College of Science & Engineering and University of Minnesota Foundation to ensure that the strategies of Mechanical Engineering align with other University marketing and brand strategies-Write content and tell compelling stories that show impact; use these stories in various print materials, websites, and social media-Supervise student employees that may assist with design, writing, and website maintenance-Establish and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders-Evaluate emerging opportunities for communicating department activities and achievements

Graphic and Multimedia Design (40%)-Manage department website and social media outlets providing continuous updating and regular/timely postings.-Revise and redesign scientific graphics for use in scientific journals and research proposals-Develop and design materials for promotional elements targeted at external stakeholders-Develop multimedia materials (images and videos) for website and social media-Initiate and develop marketing and promotional materials, including department reports, digital signage, and internal analog signage throughout the department-Teach students, faculty, and staff best practices in graphic design for scientific figures, and scientific social media communication.

University-Wide, Collegiate & Department Citizenship (5%)-Serve on committees as needed for the University, College, and Department-Actively participate in the College Communicators Group

Other Duties as Assigned (5%)

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:Requires BA/BS degree in Marketing, Graphic Design, Communications, Journalism,

Art or a related field plus 2 years professional experience, or 6 years combined equivalent education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:-Experience using Google Workspace, MS Office, Adobe Suite including InDesign, Illustrator, AfterEffects, and Photoshop software-Experience developing and implementing a communications plan-Experience developing or implementing a social media plan for a company or organization.-Experience working in a higher education setting, preferably in STEM disciplines-Experience working with diverse constituents-Experience with website content management, preferably with Drupal and Google Sites-Strong oral and written communication skills with an emphasis on detail and accuracy-Ability to solve problems and work independently-Ability to diplomatically balance the needs of various stakeholders
