Given the dynamic nature of the global payments industry and the valued partnership between our team and the business, we see it as imperative to attract and develop talented people by:Providing rich work experiences and opportunities for professional developmentRecognizing and rewarding those who drive and deliver resultsRespecting and valuing diversity, integrity, and personal accountabilityHow will you make an impact in this role?The General Counsel’s Organization (GCO) at American Express is seeking a Manager & Counsel to support the U.S. Merchant Marketing  and Global Network Marketing organizations within the Global Merchant & Network Services (GMNS) business.  The successful candidate will provide legal support and advice to the broad-based team of talented and innovative marketers within GMNS, which will include review of merchant-facing and bank partner-facing marketing collateral, review of various offers and co-marketing initiatives, and support for our Amex Offers program, including drafting and negotiating related marketing agreements.  Here’s just some of what you’ll do in this role:Review and advise on marketing claims, disclosures and other merchant customer communications; perform critical role in the marketing review process for merchant-facing marketing contentAdvise GMNS marketing teams on complex and novel advertising initiatives, including the marketing of new and refreshed merchant offers and promotions, editorial content, sales materials, and claim substantiationAct as a subject matter expert on all things related to advertising law and UDAAP, in particular, for business clients as well as colleagues within the General Counsel’s Organization Draft and negotiate advertising and promotional contracts including insertion orders, sponsorship agreements, content licensing agreements and various other co-marketing initiatives Help develop and advise on internal marketing guidelines and best practices, including advising on the collateral review requirements and processes for the merchant and network-based marketing teamsCollaborate closely with colleagues across the General Counsel’s Organization, including marketing support for other businesses, as well as compliance, privacy and other stakeholder groups, to drive consistency and coordination across the enterpriseGenerally, advise marketing teams across the GMNS organization to help them manage legal risk while delivering on their mission to deploy compelling marketing and to provide innovative and valuable offers across the payments ecosystemMinimum QualificationsJ.D. with admission to New York Bar 3+ years of relevant work experience in a law firm and/or in-house corporate legal environmentSpecific experience and knowledge in marketing/advertising supportPreferred QualificationsKnowledge of advertising laws, including FTC guidelines and UDAAP/UDAP principlesExperience drafting and negotiating advertising and marketing-related contractsStrong communication skills with ability to convey advice clearly and synthesize complex issues Demonstrated experience in gaining credibility, managing expectations, and developing strong working relationships with legal colleagues and clientsExperience with the payments or e-commerce industry or merchant acquiringStrong analytical, problem-solving and project management skillsSelf-motivated, high level of personal energy and commitmentQualificationsSalary Range: $110,000.00 to $190,000.00 annually + bonus + benefitsThe above represents the expected salary range for this job requisition.
