Communications and Marketing Lead

Yerkes Observatory, Williams Bay, Wisconsin, United States, 53191

About us:

Yerkes Observatory is a “127-year-old start-up” actively rehabilitating, reimagining, and refreshing our grounds, buildings, science, education and programming to become a confluence of astronomy, architecture, arboretum, and art. We’re on an incredible journey to fulfill our mission to “advance humankind's understanding of the universe and our place within it, igniting curiosity, facilitating exploration, and nurturing a deep sense of connection with our planet and each other.” We’ve got scientists, artists, administrators, educators, and more working together to preserve our legacy and share astronomy as inspiration for discovery and expression. And we need your help.

About you:

You’re a team player who isn’t afraid to pitch in and help when things need to get done. You’re a creative mind and enthusiastic communicator, especially in all things social media. You’re organized and able to gauge and prioritize the most efficient way to get our content and messaging out in the world. You want to work with nice, intelligent people who think that STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) can inspire wonder, curiosity, and innovation - all in a beautifully eccentric building on historic grounds.

The job:

The Communications and Marketing Lead is responsible for connecting with audiences near and far by sharing the Yerkes story and brand to drive engagement, visitation, and relationships.

Responsibilities include all aspects of envisioning, creating, and executing external communications (regular social media, website, e-news, e-vites, video content, press relations and visits, press releases, constituent communications) as well as internal communications (board and staff messaging, documenting events and programs, creating invitations, etc). The Communications and Marketing Lead personally creates Yerkes content by working in close collaboration with colleagues and by finding the right external experts, connections, and contractors to amplify the institution’s presence and voice.

This position mainly works onsite, though partial remote work is possible. Occasional night and weekend hours are required to document events and programs. The workload varies depending on the season and projects at hand.

What you’ll do:

Manage the online presence of Yerkes, including social media and website content updates, quality control, analysis, SEO, and reporting.

Implement creative, grass-roots strategies to build and enhance the Observatory’s impact locally, regionally, and nationally.

Assist in establishing marketing objectives and developing a prioritized marketing plan.

Increase audience awareness and institutional recognition.

Ensure all external communications and positioning reflect the goals and values of the organization.

Engage regional and national media through press junkets run by Visit Lake Geneva as well as via partnership, personal cultivation of relationships, and outreach.

Collaborate with staff to develop a creative, authentic Yerkes voice and brand appropriate to each social channel and apply it to your social media strategy. Manage Yerkes’ social media accounts as well as monitoring sites such as Tripadvisor, Wikipedia, Guidestar, etc.

Collect content from colleagues and create the monthly e-newsletter, evaluating success with metrics.

Design and execute web and print ads, e-invitations, and similar as needed.

Partner with colleagues, committees, and outside designers or contractors to produce printed collateral as needed.

Provide email responses to regular public queries, coordinate and write web FAQs. Ensure phone tree and messages respond to public needs and institutional goals.

Document events and programs using video and photos.

Work within budgeted funding.

Other duties as assigned.

What you’ll need:

HS diploma or Associate’s degree.

Two or more years of demonstrated success in a related or similar role.

Ability to write engagingly, entertainingly, and accurately.

A strong eye for photography and good design.

Experience with public-facing communications and marketing and posting content to common social platforms.

Ability to take high-quality images and videos as required.
