What We Offer

The City and County of Denver offers a competitive salary commensurate with education and experience. The salary range for this position is $84,000 – $110,000/year. We also offer generous benefits for full-time employees which include but are not limited to:

Location

The City and County of Denver supports a hybrid workplace model. Employees work where needed, at a job site several days a week and off-site as needed. In this position you can expect to work three (3) days a week in our downtown office (101 W. Colfax Ave., Denver, CO 80202). Employees must work within the state of Colorado on their off-site days.

Who We Are & What You’ll Do

The Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) provides a broad range of programs, services, facilities, and park amenities within the City and County of Denver. The City’s park system encompasses approximately 320 urban parks, parkways, and natural areas, totaling over 7,000 acres. The department boasts more than 14,000 acres of pristine mountain parks, eight golf courses, 24 lakes, more than 78,000 trees, over 80 miles of trails, 14 off-leash dog parks, and over 300 athletic fields. The recreation system includes 30 recreation centers, 16 outdoor pools, and 16 indoor pools serving more than one million visitors annually. Recreation efforts include arts and cultural classes and events, aquatics, sports and fitness opportunities, and youth programming.

As the Marketing and Communications Specialist for DPR, you will be a part of a collaborative and cross-functional Marketing and Communications Team that supports DPR with internal communications, marketing and promotions, and community engagement.

Specifically, as the Marketing and Communications Specialist for DPR you will:

Serve as the primary spokesperson and point of contact for the media: accurately and thoroughly researching complex issues, synthesizing complicated matters and data into an understandable context, following through on inquiries in a timely matter, drafting messages for approval and dissemination, and providing on-camera interviews or written statements on behalf of DPR, as needed

Develop and maintain strong working relations with media outlets and individual journalists both locally and within the broader Parks and Recreation industry

Develop strong working relations with internal staff in order to assist and advise on media and communication strategies to reach target audiences; this includes proactively engaging media, coordinating press-related events, and creating messaging for high-profile projects and issues

Support internal communication strategies to enhance employee engagement and awareness of organizational priorities and activities by developing or contributing to internal newsletters, informational materials and correspondences, employee meetings and committees, and other related strategies to facilitate communication

Prepare and disseminate responses to public information and CORA requests, and assure legal compliance in areas affecting public access to information

·Review and edit a variety of public-facing documents, plans, reports, memos and presentations, as needed

Provide crisis management and communications during emergency situations by managing and responding to media requests, serving as a spokesperson, reporting on follow-through of crisis communications efforts, and collaborating with and/or serving in the Joint Information Center as needed

What You’ll Bring

Our ideal candidate has some or all the following experience, skills, and characteristics:

Experience working as a public information officer (PIO) and/or spokesperson

Knowledge of topics and trends in Denver Parks and Recreation, or – more broadly – the City and County of Denver

Experience working with the media

Confidence in front of the camera

Strong writing and editing skills

Strong understanding of both local and national industry media outlets

Required Minimum Qualifications

Education requirement: Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Marketing, Communications or a related field

Experience Requirement: Four (4) years of full performance, professional level experience performing marketing and/or public relations functions including research and analysis, developing public announcements and publications, and developing marketing and/or public relations strategies

Education/Experience Equivalency: One (1) year of the appropriate type and level of experience may be substituted for each required year of post-high school education; additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements
