12 monthsSUMMARYThis comprehensive role requires a dynamic individual who can effectively communicate and engage with the Durango School District community through innovative and modern communication strategies. The Communications Specialist will be responsible for creating, managing, and disseminating high-quality multimedia communication for Durango School District 9-R. This role involves integrating contemporary design theory, digital literacy, and strategic communication skills to effectively engage with the school district’s staff, students, and families, as well as the larger community. Responsible for strategic communications projects including updating websites and social media, newsletters, and news releases. Collaborate with District staff to produce professionally designed print and electronic communications that support the strategic plan of Durango School District 9-R. Provide communications and writing support to the Board of Education, Superintendent, School Directors, and Supervisors as needed.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Utilize contemporary design theory and software to design, write, produce, and proof professional materials (including social media content, website content, newsletters, brochures, advertisements, flyers, etc.).Develop marketing materials for departments and special events, ensuring alignment with the purpose, tone, target audience, channel, and tactic.Integrate typography, photography, graphics, and color schemes into effective designs and layouts.Create spot graphics, presentations, and templates as needed.Capture photographs and video for use in District publications.Implement and enforce graphic standards across all materials.

Guidance and Best Practices (10%)

Provide guidance and best practices to District staff and schools on marketing, communication tools, and graphic standards.Stay updated on new methods and technologies to keep the District’s marketing and communications efforts cutting-edge.Collaborate with staff to develop and implement communications and marketing plans.

Confidential Matters and Support (5%)

Handle confidential matters for Durango School District 9-R, including information requests.Provide administrative and clerical support, including researching topics, preparing executive summaries, and coordinating with other departments.Maintain materials for School District events, special presentations, and ceremonies.

Database and Archive Management (10%)

Maintain mail/email databases for media, member bodies, newsletter subscribers, local businesses, and others.Archive District’s news releases, newsletters, and media mentions.Prepare electronic clippings for the Executive Team, reporting, and website purposes.Assist in coordinating communications and public relations efforts, including website updates, social media, news releases, newsletters, special publications, and advertising.

Community Representation (5%)

Represent the School District at community functions and with community organizations.Serve on District-wide committees.Stay current on educational issues, school public relations practices, and graphics applications.

Crisis Communication (10%)

Support the District’s crisis and emergency communications functions, including managing communication channels and delivering messages.Provide training and best practices for crisis communication.

Video Asset Development (10%)

Develop video assets to educate community members and constituents.Inform media and other interested parties of district initiatives and goals through filming, editing, and script development.

Asset Development Support (10%)

Support the development of district assets, including photographs, videos, letters, newsletters, partnerships, programs, and services.

Digital Flyer Management (15%)

Manage and oversee the digital flyer software system, including managing and approving digital submissions from outside agencies.Communicate with and support partners using the software.

Other Duties (5%)

Perform other duties as assigned to support the overall mission and goals of the communications department.
